I am a theology major and am writing a paper on the sign miracles in John and how they show the diety of Christ. I have read chapter 11 over and over and I don't see the sign that points towards his deity. Any Ideas? my paper can be emailed to give examples of the caliber of answers need.

A common Rabbinical teaching at the time was that the spirit lingered at the body of the deceased for 3 days, but afterward departed to Sheol. Jesus raised Lazarus after he was dead four days, thus bringing back his spirit from the abode of the dead.
Another approach is that Martha stated that Lazarus had been dead four days and by now there would be a stench from the corpse, indicating irreversible corruption. Raising a man from such a state would demonstrate creative life giving power, such as only God possesses.

If you read the story from the beginning it becomes apparent that Christ knew ahead of time everything that would happen. From the moment he was told that Lazarus was ill his reaction indicates that he knew Lazarus would die, and that he would go there, and that he would raise him from the dead. He had complete foreknowledge of a miracle that only God could perform. How could he not be divine?

I think the big miracles here are twofold:

1 -- he showed his true humanity when he wept for grief over his friend,

and 2, He showed his deity by proving that he holds the power of life and death.

The sign is that "Only God can raise someone from the dead, and that Jesus has the power to raise us up from the death of sin."
Hope this meets your requirements for your paper. If not, maybe it will help you to look at this passage in a new light. Hope you do well on it.God Bless.

"I AM"

There is your sign. He raised Lazarus from the dead to show that "I AM the Resurrection and THE LIFE"

He healed a paralytic to show that He forgives sin "Who can forgive sin but God?"

He multiplies the bread and fish to show that "I AM the bread of life"

When Moses asked "Who shall I say sent me?" God responded to tell them that "I AM" has sent you.
Jesus is the "I AM"
