You really won't feel too much pain. The nurse will first tie a turnicate around your arm to help pop your veins out so they are more noticeable. Then he/she will insert the needle - during this stage you'll feel a slight pinch. Once the needle is in it will be easy and painless. Depending on how much blood the doctor needs the nurse may need to change tubes, if this is the case you may feel another slight pinch when they place a new tube on but it won't be anything horrible.

If you're really nervous try not to think about it. Don't look at what the nurse is doing to you, instead look off to the side and read the posters or something on the wall. If you have to, start up a small conversation with our nurse to keep your mind off of it.

Good Luck, you'll be fine!

Normal blood draws are not that painful. If you are overly sensitive to the needle prick, let the phlebotomist know. They do make a cream that will numb the area before hand. The best idea may be to have someone squeeze your other hand (hard) while they take the blood. The last time my daughter had blood drawn I squeezed he opposite hand and when it was over she said her hand hurt worse than the stick.

Are you by chance planning on natural child birth???

go to a drugstore and buy a 'Topical anesthetic' (just ask the cashier). when you get in to the doctor's, ask where the blood will be drawn from, and apply the Topical anesthetic according to the instructions. It will numb up the area for a while.
I know, it does hurt. I hate needles so much. I hope this helps you. and good luck with your pregnancy.

Ask them to use the needle they use when taking blood from children. It's very fine, and is virtually painless. I have small veins and that's the one they always use on me. It makes taking blood that much easier. Remember tho, that it only takes about 30 seconds, so it shouldn't be too emotionally invasive then should it? Good health to you and I hope you have a happy pregnancy!

It doesn't hurt, to get blood drawn. I bet you will find out that you have a lot more to worry about than a little stick with a needle. Tell them to use a fine needle. Goes in easier and doesn't hurt.

Agree with Alex. There is a skin cream that you can apply to desensitize the area. You need to put it on several minutes prior to blood collection. It will help if you let the blood technician know that you need to apply the cream so that s/he can inform you which area to place it on.

Best wishes on your pregnancy.

Do not get drunk while pregnant. Ignore Bert.

I find that it is much less painless when they do a pinprick and then a capillary tube than when the use a hypodermic needle and syringe.
