Instead, I want to be clear about the fact that being supported by a great Love is not a burden, and that it is beautiful to be a Christian.

Being a cristian involves giving up the rational and logical part of your brain... The "washing" occurs over a number of weeks as subscribers are encouraged to actually talk with and have "prayers" with their chosen imaginary friend... the more they talk to the imaginary friend, the more the subscriber actually "believes" they are in direct communication with a supernatural being or "god"
Once you have finally lost all sense of reason and can answer every argument with "its in the bible" then you are probably a "proper" cristian.

In order to be a christian...I feel like you would have to give up your whole life and surrender it all totally to God.

You don't HAVE to give up anything to be a Christian. All you HAVE to do is accept Jesus Christ as your savior. Once that happens you will want to live a life pleasing to God and you will no longer be a slave to sin. Once we get saved we are FREE to live a life that is pleasing to Christ.
