The God of the Old testament is the same as the New one. Only difference is in the OT God had to EXPLAIN how to be perfect wheras in the NT He was able to SHOW how to be perfect.
Ya, He was abit strict in the OT but that's because people are generally really stupid and didn't listen or care, and not much has changed, apparantly, which is why most of you still don't understand.
Sacrifices had to be made to show that the Jews seeked forgiveness and meant it. Christ (who was God) sacrificed Himself to show how much all the people of the world meant to Him and death is the ultimate test of faith. God needs us to die because it's in the afterlife where He can actually do something with us, in this life He has no control unless we allow Him to.
You all assume death is a horrible thing, when in actuality, it's possibly the best thing for us. We are supposed to value God more than our very lives, which is why we sacrifice them for Him to show our faith and dedication.

which is why i'm not totally surprised most of you dont' understand because you do value your lives more than a God that isn't tangible... but if you knew the truth, i can only hope you'd feel different and it sucks because i wish you did open your mind to the truth.

I would say I have a better than average understanding of the Bible. I majored in theology years ago and would be I could discuss the Bible on an intelligent level with anyone here. I just can't believe it anymore. Right now I try to live in the moment and make this life count for everything it can. I do not want to wasted time worrying about a possible future life.

In the new testament, it does not show a perfect god either, just a racist one.
He was strict in OT? Lets see, when Onan refused to spray his sperm into his sister in law, he was killed by the almighty himself because he was not pleased that Onan did not want to perform incest sex for his viewing pleasure, he should travel into the future and get XXX-Rated DVDs instead. Moses was sent by him to virtually wipe out an entire city killing all the men, boys and women who are not virgins (I guess he needed virgin women to be chess partners, is it, or what did he do to the virgin women?). He turn the poor woman into a pillar of salt just because she turn her head. He ..... nevermind, you got the point.
I would call that tyranny instead of strict.
So if this perfect creature needs sacrifices to power his engine and virtually live on praise, does that not make him a conceited @sshole? If he has no control, then he is not omnipotent. If he has control then he is a jerk for not using his omnipotentness properly.
We do not assume death is a horrible thing, it is a most natural thing. You assumed we assumed that death is a horrible thing. I would not call it the best thing though, I felt to live now to the fullest is the best thing. I do not wish to waste my life on an imaginary creature.
-------
You have a closed mind to think you know what we think and to think you know the truth. You just think that is the truth because you are indoctrinated and having alternative ideas closed to you.

well, by all means go and prove your faith. Jump off the nearest bridge, I wont shed any tears.
Sad how your religion debases human existence. Must make your lives feel very empty and pointless.
I did enjoy your "explanation" of the difference between the OT and NT gods. Funny how a "perfect" being had to change his methods though:)

I'm not sure why you think Athiest have trouble understanding the Bible. Most athiests I know have read the Bible, and they understand fine.
Why did God require sacrifice? Oh yeah, because he liked the smell of burning guts (read your Bible ,its in there).
As for Christ's dying, he resurrected so is this really a sacrifice? Especially if he knew he was coming back?

If you think this is the common Christian understanding of the Bible, you are greatly mistaken.
What is more, even if Atheists were to agree with your interpretation of the Bible, because we don't believe in God, it makes no difference what the idea of God was from one testament to the next. It's all a human creation, just like your interpretation.

You, my dear, need an education.
Read a history book. They were generally stupid? Really? Sigh...
A bit strict? I'd hate to be your kid.
Who the heck said death is a horrible thing? You all seem to think that the idea of this life being it is horrifying. We don't.

its not that we dont understand it
it that we understand its a load of illogical information.
But I understand it, it makes sense in the story land times it was written, but not a legitimate source of knowledge.
take the old lessons and information as you please, but realize its simply a book,of old and misconstrued information.
The idea you dont want to learn anything you dont need to know is appalling. If we had to know all of the science behind everything we do just to do it, we would be overwhelmed. Be careful of the things you dismiss simply because you don't NEED it. I don't NEED or BELIEVE the bible, but I still KNOW it. ( or know it enough ;-)

They have the wrong approach to the study of the Bible and its interpretation.
True exegesis (interpretation) is Fides quaerens intellectum, which means that faith seeks understanding. So the seeker must approach the Word from the point of faith and love, for the inspired writers communicated the Word in the language of faith and love. To refuse to do this is to have the Bible remain closed to us, even if we can write a literary analysis of every book in it.
One must therefore read the Bible on the same level that it was written – that is, on the spiritual level. A passage must be read in its proper context in order to be understood – its context in that chapter and book and in the whole Bible.

if death is the best thing for us then why don't all of you do us all a favor and yourself and commit suicide? go on be a martyr !
PS most atheists have read and understand the bible, we just understand it to be a story, a fable, because of all the contradictions and illogical and impossible not to mention unprovable things in it, not a literal truth. your argument about god did not even make any sense, you were rambling....what was the question exactly?
