I have two kittens, one male one female. Both are around 16 weeks old, and the male's testicles have started to drop, so I know in a few months he can be neutered, but I was wondering about the female as I don't think it's as obvious as with males.

My male and female are 5 months and I had them done last week. Cats mature at different rates. Watch them and ask the vet what he recommends considering what you tell him they're doing.

It depends on who you ask...the vet's office I used to work for wouldn't touch anything before six months of age. They felt that until then they couldn't handle the anesthesia properly, and by then the testicles should have dropped.

That said, I have seen it done as early as 12 weeks of age, which I feel is way too young for an animal to undergo major surgery like that, but each vet has their own way of operating. I can also see why some spay/neuter that young, for instance animal shelters that do, possibly because some individuals would otherwise not fix their pets.

Personally, I would wait until six months old, or when your vet recommends it, and if the male starts showing interest or trying to mount the female, separate them until the surgery can be done.

Some vets will spay/neuter as young as 8 weeks, while some prefer to wait until 4-6 months. I once had a kitten go into heat at 4 months (I had her spayed the following week).

I'd suggest having them both spayed/neutered in the next few weeks.

Female cats can be spayed anywhere from 10 weeks old and up. Usually it's done between 4 and 6 months of age. A cat can have several litters of kittens a year, with 4-7 kittens per litter... you do the math. Be a responsible pet owner and get her spayed as soon as possible.

Wow - every single one of your is wrong!

Kittens can be spayed or neutered once they are eight weeks in age and two pounds in weight. Most shelters now follow this early spay/neutering as it's much easier on the animal and ensures that the animal is adopted out already fixed. Here female cats are generally neutered at 5 - 6 months, as some can come into season as early as 8 months.

The best time for both male and female cats (and dogs) to be castrated or spayed is 6 months of age.

Females can get pregnant as young as 4 months of age, the best way is to ask your vet, they'll know when to best time is to spay your cat, each cat is different, some can't get spayed at all(I had a small cat that because of a spine defect she couldn't be spayed without huge risks of dieing) please talk to your vet.

The female can be neutered now and as soon as the boy's testicles drop you can go get him snipped. ASAP!
