(refering to digital) once u overexpose and area its gone forever . If its overexpose (blow out the highlight details) the area will be completely white , also u can slightly underexpose a picture then correct it with software hope this helps .

If your camera has a histogram, learn to use it. Blown areas will bunch up off the scale to the right. Dark with no detail, (blocked) to the extreme left. Middle tones in-between. Or use the "winky-blinkies". Blown areas blink.

If your camera consistently blows highlights, set the exposure comp to minus. You can lift a slightly underexposed image in post processing, but you can't recover what's not there. Ideally, you should get it right or very near the mark at time of capture. The less you have to do in post, the better your image will look.

We didn't used to worry so much about blown highlights in the film days. Negative film has more latitude than digital sensors, and will tolerate a couple of stops over just fine. In fact, many photographers routinely set the camera to over expose negative film by a third or half stop, to get saturation and detail. Shooting digitally is akin to shooting slides so far as exposure is concerned. Over is a no-no.

You can also bracket your exposure, and keep the best one.

an area of a picture is overexposed only if you were expecting to see detail in that area and all you see is white
