Paris, France is widely known to be nicknamed "The City of Light" because of it's early adoption of street lights.

Eindhoven, Holland is also called "The City of Light" by the Dutch because of the light bulb industry that started there in 1891 by Anton Philips.

And Vegas... is "Sin City" or "The Entertainment Capital"

Officially New York City is the "Big Apple", "Gotham" and "The City that Never Sleeps."

I've never heard it called "The city of lights" in my 15 plus years in the Tri-state area but its my humble opinion a visitor enjojing the NYC Night Life may call it so.
