I have always been a big fan of things from your hometown. Keychains, ballcaps, pictures, etc...
It sounds bad, but if you are going to be meeting for any type of business, cigarettes from the duty free shop are also a great and very appreciated gift in the land of 300 million smokers. You can probably find some of the best gifts in the airport stores, although a little expensive, the I love NY shirts and US gear are great!

I don't know why, but my relatives like getting snacks from my parents when they go back to visit. Peanuts, macadamia nuts, dried foods, etc. all fair well with them. You might run into some trouble bringing stuff overseas, but my parents have done it every single time without problems so it can't be that hard. Kids will love almost anything. Small toys, pencils, small books you can purchase for $1. They're fascinated by all things "American".

Don't come to China. This country is full of scam artists and retarded motorists who have no repsect for pedestrians. Even if you get hit by a car while crossing the road on a green light, the law will defend the driver because YOU ARE A FOREIGNER!! and they are locals. (95% of crimes against foreigners are undocumented)
I know because it happened to me in the city that I live in SHANGHAI.
The Chinese people are also very racist and very rude in public.
It's very sad because I'm a Chinese American expat who was very pro-China when I moved here last year. I even wrote extensive economic research papers defending and promoting both the government and the people. Now, my feelings are "GET ME OUT OF THIS COUNTRY!!"
It's really sad how with in one year my opinion has changed so much about this contry I once loved.

Candy or soap, no I am not being sarcastic many outlying towns find it hard to get soap. Not the main towns and cities though. Often pencils for the kids as well. Enjoy your trip and be careful crossing the road as taxis don't slow down at crossings they speed through at 30 to 40 mph.

I would like to suggest key chains with USA written on it, for example the city name that you live in. It is small and lightweight which makes it easy to carry.

Don't give them anything that is edible. Stickers or toys for the little kids. That is if you're in the countryside, urban kids would look at you weird, their rich now.

I would say: something uniquely and exclusively from the US, e.g. T-shirt, baseball cap, chocolate, picture books or calendars about US scenery, basically anything symbolic about US would be appreciated and popular.
I am originally from Beijing, and now running a tour business in the US, specialize in tours to China: JIA's Dream Tours.
