My Papillon puppy is getting seriously out of control when I try to trim his nails, he bit three people this afternoon just from trying to trim his nails. I tried the whole putting the trimmers on the ground to let him get used to them, tried the playing with his feet while he's calm, but he still freaks out. I dont know how to handle the freak outs, should I be the dominant one and pin him? His bites HURT, break skin. He's a sweet pup otherwise and is NEVER aggressive. I just dont know how to react when it happens, I end up getting really frustrated and yell and put him down and ignore him, but it gets worse everytime, I couldnt even get his nails trimmed this time. Should I get a muzzle and muzzle him and just do it? I dont want him to react this way when I'm not around, say at the vet's office. PLEASE HELP :( Also, I live in an area with no dog trainers :(

I would check with the American Kennel Club www.akc.org, find the link to the National Papillion Breed Club. They will help you find a reputable breeder near you who can help solve your pup's behavior problems.

Do not muzzle him, it will only make matters worse.

Definitely get a muzzle so you won't get bitten. Also, wrap him up in a towel so that only his head and feet stick out.Wrap him snugly.Just go about clipping the nails as if you were washing a dish, pay no attention to the dog, other than making him hold still. He will fight and pant and whine, but he'll survive. When you're through, take the muzzle off and let the dog calm down and give him a treat. Then, get down to the library or bookstore and get some books on dog -training.

Get a muzzle and put it on her everytime you wan to trim her. After you take the muzzle off, give her a treat though and praise her well cause she will get smart about the muzzle and if you don't make it positive for her she will start biting when she sees that muzzle coming. My friends toy poodle is just like that. They hate her at the groomers! They muzzle her also.

A puppy of this age should be getting enough walks that the nails will wear down themselves. If you feel thay are too long then ask the vet to trim them. He will also be able to advise you regarding a muzzle or sedation.

Theres one other alternative you can try before you'll have to have him sedated for nail trims. Get yourself a Dremel with the small round sander attachment....start out with one nail on one day (this is to get him use to the sound)....then move to two nails...then more and so on (this will take some time). Also a dremel works well if you get to close to the quick since it will cauterize it instead of letting it bleed.

Hope this helps.

I would probably put a muzzle on him and hope for the best. Whenever he bites you, make a sound like a hurt puppy. It helps them understand you don't like it.
