Prices will vary depending on your area and which store you call. Cakes are definitelyless expensive at a grocery store verse a bakery. Probably between $0.50- $2.00 per person, compared to $4 per person and up for a traditional bakery it can help your budget.
One thing you want to keep in mind is that cakes from a grocery store are not fresh, they are actuall frozen. Although most are very good you want to make sure you order from a place where you have previously ordered and enjoyed the cake.
Another money saving tip is to order a small traditional or fancy wedding cake, and some sheet cakes. The caterer will keep the sheet cakes in the kitchen. After the cake cutting ceremony they wisk the cake away and come out with slices and no one is the wiser!
Good luck!

A nice-quality groceery store cake is going to run you probably between $150-250 for a 3-tier cake that can feed 150-200 people. Here's a tip: get your cake at Safeway. I'm not kidding- their cakes are prettier and better-tasting thant any of the fancy bakeries out here in Denver. We get all our birthday cakes from Safeway, and I've decided to do the whole cupcake tower instead of a traditional wedding cake, so Safeway will be making my cupcakes. Their icing is so good, and the cake is always really fresh and moist. I haven't had a bad one from there yet! Plus, they are very affordable- since I'm doing cupcakes, my situation is a bit different, but they quoted me 60 cents per cupcake, and that is with a little flower decoration on top of each one. For the 150 cupcakes I'm going to need, that is only $90, which is actually $60 less than what I originally budgeted for cake!! Here's where not to get your cake: Wal-Mart (I love Wal-Mart as a store, but their icing tastes like lard); Albertson's (ditto the lard-icing, plus they never taste fresh); King Soopers (I don't know if you have King Soopers where you are, but they are a Kroger store, so if you have any Kroger affiliates, they probably all use the same bakery recipes, and it's not good!!) I also hear Costco has amazing cakes for a great price, but I don't know because I don't have a membershp there.

Costco cakes are oh so good and we got a sheet for no more than $50.
Just tell the bakery you want an all white cake with withever decorations/strawberries you want on it. If you state it's a wedding cake, they might jump up the price.

I fed a bridal shower of about 30 people for $50 with a costco cake and mmmm mmm it was good. So I'm guessing the cake should be atleast under $100.

Number of tiers usually doesn't matter, it is about number of servings. A plain grocery store cake should run you less than a dollar a serving.

If you are looking for a sheet cake then you will pay around $50 but if you are looking for a tiered cake you are looking at alot more cause you are charged for the tiers also. Now if you know someone who is creative with cakes then Here is a web site that might help you. www.coolestcakes.com

Probably $100 or a little more. That's quite a bit less than what you would pay somewhere else.
