Why is it that when Catholics confess their sins they go to a priest instead of going straight to God? The person who creates us and knows us. I think that that would be the best source instead of some one who is of flesh. Where does it say in the bible that you are supposed to confess your sins to a priest? Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not a Catholic and I don't believe in that either, but... let me say that it doesn't say it ANYWHERE... plus I would hate for someone like that to know every little detail about my life! ;D

They are confessing to God. Serioulsy guys, Catholocism makes sense if you just think about it a little.
A priest is a man of God. It's a face, someone to talk to you. A way to help the words come out. From your mouth to Gods ear. A priest is a teacher, a guide, and a man of God. You don't HAVE to confess. You can go and kneel in a church and talk straight to God and Jesus if you so choose. It's an option is all.

edit: See this is why people can't take Christians seriously. You guys can't even "love and accept" each OTHER. (See above post) and you expect us to believe you love and accept us? It's just plain laughable.
Christianity is defined as followers of Christ. Catholics accept Jesus as thier savior and lord. THAT IS CHRISTIAN. Everything else is just petty details.

I am not a Catholic and I don't go to a priest, however it is her God given right to believe in the faith that she has been taught. We don't all believe the same as Christians, the doctrine and dogma, but as Christians we must be supportive of each other. There are enough contributors in R & S who mock and scoff at God, without us contributing to it also.

As Christians we must recognize we worship Jesus, maybe not the same way, but all the same Jesus. We must stand together in this or the ungodly will win. It cannot be a "game of I win and you lose" because we might not like what we have won.

in the bible we are taught to confess our sins ith our mouths -- AKA aloud. Christ gave & gives His Spirit to us and in the bible it says - some will lead, teach, follow, etc. some will be first second third. when we are in the confessional we are confessing aloud to another human who can hear - however when we are there we are speaking to Christ - HE is the most important one who needs to hear. the priest will often offer sctiptures and support and encouragement.

have you ever had to do a speech or presentation for school or work or even just had to have a challenging conversation with someone? most people, when faced with that situation go over things in the head or even out loud sometimes in front of the mirror. it's fairly easy to say focused and suscinct. however when you get in front of the person, people or crowd - boy so things change. i find confession to y priest quite similar. there are things that i do confess daily or in the moment to God and there are others that i feel i need more accountability - with those i go to the priest. they are very supportive and understanding. i even go when i just need support for a situation that will be presenting itself in the near future.

beck-ay hit the nail on the head - she wouldn't want someone to know her imtimate details -- why not -- God knows them already?! thats the other thing about the confessional - the priest is bound to secrecy for he is not listening for himself but rather just a face to be there for accountablity to God.

The sacrament of confession is started in the Bible when Jesus says (talking to Peter) whatever sins you forgive I forgive and whatever sins you don't forgive I will not forgive (I am paraphrasing of course). Catholics do not believe that they can't go to God for forgiveness. Many of the sacraments purpose is to keep the body of Christ (the Church) strong. Confession is a physical manifestation of forgiveness. It is very powerful to confess your sins and to hear "you are forgiven" out loud. It also upholds the idea that as Christians we are accountable to each other for our actions.

God give the priest the authority to forgive the sinners, by the name of Christ.
