When doing PT tests and while training in Basic are you able to do pushups with your fists (as opposed to flat palms)? This would be for a male joining the Army.

Yes you are allowed, but I think it must get painful after a while...but they recently changed the rules so that is can be done that way if you choose, so there must be someone who wanted to do it that way.

Yes. Fist push ups are allowed on the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test), but the drill sergeants may make you change during training. Likewise, when you're doing push ups on not-so-soft terrain, your palms might be a better option.

I have a ganglion cyst on my left wrist. It kinda hurts sometimes if I do palm push ups on it, so I trained myself to do fist push ups. Now, I do fist push ups with my left, and palm push ups with my right. It looks weird, but whatever works...

You will be thoroughly briefed before each APFT as to what is and is not acceptable. If you have any doubts, the drill sergeants will clarify. Don't be afraid to ask; it's their jobs to instruct and train you correctly.

Do whatever is most comfortable for you. I have alot of trouble doing pushups (I used to swim alot, and I think my muscles grew weird) so someone suggested I try changing the way my hands were and it really helped alot (as in, I doubled the amount of pushups I could do automatically). Don't listen to these people telling you that you can't do something or that you'll get made fun of. Follow the regs, and you'll be ok.

I had to look this up just to see if the Army was wimping out or wiping out wimps.

It says place your hands where comfortable and your feet can be together or up to 12 inches apart.

A secondary thought is "Do what you are told" Ignoring a guy with 2 or more stripes is bad karma,

Soldiers may do the push-up event on their fists. This may be necessary due to a prior injury. There is no unfair advantage to be gained by doing so.

Press-ups on the knuckles will probably be used as a different form of exercise.

If you are tasked with doing normal press-ups you won't be permitted to perform them on your knuckles, it's a slightly different exercise and you will have to do them the same as everyone else.

What on earth would make you want to?

No. You do them the way everyone else does or you bring "attention" to yourself....

You don't want attention. Attention is a bad thing. Showing off by walking on your knuclkes is an attention getter.

You'll get to do push-ups in more ways than you'll want in Basic.

During your official APFT tests you'll want to do them exactly as demonstrated and ask that question from the person grading you that day. Regulations change.
