I'm so new to photography but I always wanted to start a photography business. I'd like to take close up portraits, landscapes as well as close up nature photos. I currently have a 35-105mm lense that came with the camera. I literally know nothing about lenses, this camera or anything. Any help you can provide would be great!!! Thank you so much in advance!!!

You can download the manual here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=314&modelid=11154

For landscapes, you will really need a wider angle lens than the 35 mm of that zoom. Sigma and Tamron make zoom lenses that cover the lower range from about 17mm or so to around 50 mm. That will get you started.

Close up nature can mean two things: A macro lense, or a telephoto lens.

The macro lens, or a macro capable lens, gets you the cool really close-up pictures of flowers and things. The telephoto lens acts like a telescope for your camera.

Tamron makes a lens, branded and also sold as Quantaray, in the 70mm - 300 mm range for about $150.00 USD. It's not a great lens, but is decent. It also lets you take pseudo-marco shots that are sharp. It's nice and light and I use it as a walk around lens when I don't want to carry around a heavier and larger professional lens.

I strongly recommend getting a book like 'Digital Photography for Dummies' and working your way through it. That will give you a good foundation. The XT is an excellent camera and can produce pro quality images if you can take pro quality images.

Download the manual, get the book and get started.

You may hear advice like 'take lots and lots of pictures' to get better. That advice is simply wrong. The real advice is take a lot of intentional pictures working on some aspect of photography. Anybody can take a great picture by accident, especially if you take a lot of them.

Accidents can happen to anybody, including pros. When they have an accident it may end up being a lousy photograph. It's rarely the other way around.

We realize that your choice of the Rebel XT is due to your desire to add interchangeable lenses down the road. And the 6 megapixel capacity is not a limitation. Nevertheless, should you be looking for a bargain with even more features than the Rebel XT, check out the Pentax K100D which has built-in image stabilization which works on all Pentax K-series lenses which are far more affordable than Canon auxiliary lenses. With image stabilization, you will not need a tripod for low light photography or even holding telephoto lenses. There's no shake, rattle or roll. So, what would you rather have, image stabilization built into a Pentax DSLR body or none at all if you choose the Canon Rebel. Good luck!

Lucy I have both the Canon Rebel XSi and the Canon 50D. It looks like you are considering buying a used camera and if it's in good shape, there's nothing wrong with that. The main thing you want to look at with that is how many pictures have already been taken with the camera. The Rebel line of cameras are rated at 50,000 shots and if the camera you are considering is close to that limit, you may want to look elsewhere for a camera. If it has considerably less shots, it may be a good deal at the price. I started with a Canon Rebel XT and it got about 38,000 shots before it burned up one of the internal circuit boards. The Canon Rebel series of cameras are an excellent choice for a first DSLR camera. The menus are fairly easy to learn and you will find your self reading the camera's manual often to figure out how to get that next "look" you're going for. If you are close to a consumer electronics store, I would suggest playing with the Rebel T1i or T2i to get a feel for how the camera works before making a purchase. Also you will want to ask the sales reps lots of questions so that you have an idea of what you will want to try with the camera if you get it. Hopefully this helps in your decision. If you get the camera enjoy figuring it all out and Happy Shooting!!!!!!!!

Being one who learned for many years as he went along (for the most part), I'm a bit shocked by the contrast between "I always wanted to start a photography business" and "I literally know nothing about lenses."

It's a bit like getting a car, not knowing how to drive a manual, and wanting to race NASCAR.

I'm not saying you can't do it. But it sounds like you need to shoot quite a few shots before you are really comfortable with your Canon.

I'd highly recommend going to your local community college and taking a basic photography class. You can read manuals, books, magazines, or websites, but there's nothing to replace carefully guided experiences with your camera.

It took me a long time to learn what I have learned, and I still have a long way to go! If you want to take the shorter path, look for some good classes.

Here's some info on Canon lenses for you.
