Find a nice quiet place, get comfortable and READ & STUDY the Owner's Manaul that came with the camera. To master your camera requires study, just as it does for math, history, science, etc.

Take it one feature or setting at a time, study it, practice it, and when you feel comfortable with it go to the next feature or setting.

You might also benefit from the Magic Lantern Guide To the Nikon D40x. It will make a nice supplement to the Owner's manual.

There is a review of your camera in the Oct. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine (shutterbug.com).

Anthony's right. You're just inexperienced. Guess what, I'm more inexperienced than I'll be tomorrow, so we're even!

Again, I'm sorry to say that your link isn't working, but here's a link to a very thorough guide to your D40x (and D40) that I think you should print out and save.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/index.htm

And here's some ideas on how to improve your photos.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/howto.htm
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/camera-adjustments.htm
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/color.htm

And most of all, take a ton of pictures, at all different settings, different angles, and with different framing views (zoom). Don't delete the "bad" pictures but look at them in the computer. Learn from your mistakes and leave your ego in the top drawer.

If you must post-process your photos in your computer, make it minimal. I prefer the art to come from the camera and photographer and not be created from computer software. It's like taking the Mona Lisa and tinting some of the colors because it doesn't match your livingroom.

If you have other question, PLEASE ask. We all were once where you are and most of us drift back there from time to time! I hope this helps you.

The link doesn't work.

To get a larger aperture, switch the camera to A and move the control wheel. A smaller number (like 5.6) is a larger aperture than a bigger number (like 22).

You're not retarded, just inexperienced.
