You can try, but it will probably be hard, and having a dog is a lot diff to having a hamster or rabbit - dogs can live for 15 to 20yrs so are you going to take responsibility for you dog for that many years or are your parents going to have to take over the responsibility for the dog if you leave home once you an adult?
What are the reasons why they won't let you have a dog - they might have some good reasons, and there is a more work in looking after dogs than either pet you have already had, so its a big decision. Remember that they grow up and aren't always the cute little things they were when ya got em.

Ask your mom what it will take. The issue might be no room in the house or something. If your mom and dad work outside of the home, then there is nobody at home to take care of the puppy and potty train it while you are at school. If your mom is at home, then you are really asking her to take care of it and maybe she just doesn't want to. Rather than begging, you should realize that you are asking a huge favor of her and you should be thinking of what you would do as a favor back to her. Would you cook dinner once per week and do the dishes every night? Would you clean the entire house every Saturday? That's about how much time you are asking of her, so are you ready to fairly return the favor? If so, then suggest something like that.

Show her that you are responsible enough to have the pleasure of owning a dog. Tell her why you think you should have a dog. Tell her you'll rescue one from a shelter and save a life and you'll take care of it, play with it, love it and give the dog the life it deserves. Of course, only tell her that if you're willing to do it. Good luck!

Usually parents watch how you take care of everything you own. Not just other pets.
So if you are letting things you used to like get old and fragile, letting them lay around. Maybe that is why they are hesitant to let you.

As long as you would be the one who will pick up it's mess and walk it and feed it, than no problem. A lot of times parents dont like pets, because usually they are the one ending up taking care of them
