Becuae producers are primary food sources, and energy flows through the food chain from them. (i.e., technically, everything either eats a producer or eats something that has eaten one, or something that eats something that has eaten one, or...;))

In addition to what lilyvera said in her correct answer, producers are the source of oxygen which they release during photosynthesis.
