My physical therapist had me do exercises that strengthened the inside muscles of my thighs. The knee cap gets pulled to the outside because those muscles are usually stronger.

It depends on a lot of things. Either you need to strengthen your knees or you need to back of a bit. If you're doing excercises 5 times a week that stress the knees a new exercise may just make it worse. Joint injury usually comes from doing too much or too little.
I play tennis twice a week and squats help me strengthen that area. Just half squats, not full squats. But I have to constantly monitor my knee pain and back off when I feel it coming on again. I'm not 20 anymore so I have to live with on and off and listen to my body. It's also good to do a complete layoff about twice a year for a couple of weeks to let joints rest from developing stress. Even young pro's in highly stressful sports have to do this from time to time.

you have the perfect opportunity to strenghten your knees while sitting in your chair at work. Try leg lifts, and bringing your foot forward (don't lock your knee) return to floor, and repeat in sets. try tightening leg muscles and hold. Don't try anything that causes you pain. use stairway if possible. good luck!
