the coast guard has the smallest war time because their only job is to protect americans coast and help distress calls made along the american coast line. however, since we have not had a country attact the united states via our coast line, they have not been in a war situation. that could easily change though...all it would take is for a country to attack our coast. the answer for teh other branches of service, it all depends. right now, you're probably safest in the navy. even the air force has more troops in iraq than the navy does. however, like i said before, that could easily change.

Probably the Coast Guard or Navy (assuming you're not in a ground-based role) - stationed out at sea or on naval bases, less need or opportunity to drive around... that's one major killer out of the way. In terms of combat, the Coast Guard doesn't see much these days. In a more formal and conventional war, they're more likely to do more warlike activities, but not at the moment.

In my opinion here is the list from the least to most dangerous branches Coast Guard -> Navy -> Air Force -> Army -> USMC...
a lot of times it also depends on your Specialty Job, but keep in mind one thing: In Marines, no matter what your job is, your primary is always Infantry, so if they would need gun buddies there is a big chance they will put you on a field

In boot camp... a long long long long time ago... I was asked the question, "Do you want to die for your country?" My reply was something like, "I joined the Navy of my own free will. I'm not afraid to die for my country if I have to. But I think it's better to live and keep fighting for your country.", I've subsequently found a quote by General George Patton, "No ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb die for his country."

Of course dying shouldn't be first on your list of things to do tomorrow morning. But nowhere's safe.

If you want a guarantee... you're not going to get one. If you want best odds... don't join any service. Take your chances with drunk drivers,, next coor neighbors with firearms, lightening strikes, and hospitals. More civilians die over a 3-day weekend than soldiers in a month in Iraq. In the states it's called "an accident." In Iraq, people are hunting for you.

i think everyone hit the nail on the head except drpepperdrinker, apparently he was dropped on his head as an infant or is on a terrible caffeine high........the AF is on the ground in iraq (OMG there are people in the AF that arent pilots? say it isnt so)some of them (3 AFSCs that i know of) are working very closely with army special forces over there (with very little special forces training of their own i may add) and many are in infantry type roles or doing convoys etc. the AF hasnt lost as many in the war due to the fact that the AF has smaller numbers.....but percentage wise i dont think either the navy or the AF are far behind the marines and army sorry to burst your bubble. My husband has come home with bloodstained uniforms(and not enemy blood) luckily for us not HIS blood, but i can promise you that AF blood has been spilled in Iraq.

Texas Air National Guard.

FYI: A Coast Guard cutter was the first ship to shoot down a Japanese Zero during Pearl Harbor.
