From what I've noticed, it's meant he would rather be in the company of someone else...temporarily, or permanently.
It actually means that he feels smothered--needs to spend time with friends, have some 'alone' time, do something that the person he's currently with doesn't particularly want to do (or want him to do).
People always look to where the grass is greener--that doesn't mean they won't be back--in their own time--which is selfish of them (expecting someone to put their lives on hold--waiting for them).

Guys are very simple creatures. Don't over analyze, if he says he needs his space it means just that, he needs his space or your smothering him. In other words he's not ready for the same thing you're ready for.

Usually, it means they have their sights on someone else but is not man enough to be truthful. Let go of him & tell him he should have been an astronaut if he wanted space.

It means you are getting on his nerves. He wants to be nice to make up something philosophical. He just trying to nicely say he wants out.

Could mean two things.
If you're smothering him it's a normal human reaction and you should give him more space.
If you're not smothering him it means he wants to break up.

if a guy loves you so much they should never say that; but anyways "need space" means LEAVE ME ALONE; BACK AWAY; I NEED TIME FOR MYSELF...blah blah...
