Welcome to NYC !!! LOL First things first is to get a metro card. A weekly card runs you 24 bucks.. It is unlimited. trains buses and so forth. You should look at a NYC train map now so you can just get accustomed to it now so you wont be totally lost when you get here.
For a small budget these are the best things..
Sight seeing: Take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.
Take the train to see Central Park
Take the train to BK to see Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park
also if you like go to the MOMA.. just give a dollar and you can go in
Food: I recommend bodegas..lol they are the best you can get a coffee and a bagel for 2 bucks.. they are cheap food wise and perfect for on the go..
Also try chinese food .. they usually last me two days for one order of food depending on how hungry I am..
Go to pizza parlors they give huge slices of pizza for real cheap
If you want something fancy for cheap try a diner.. that is a cheap sit down resturant where u wont see any homeless people..lol
check these websites out ok

Have fun hope this helped
P.S. HAGGLE that is the best advice.. remember you can always find it cheaper.. vendors know it.. so keep driving down the price.. they will cave..lol

It is not a problem for you because you have paid big part of travel.
Buy one week Metro Card for $21, don't take cab.
Buy food , fruit and drink from China town, you can get a lunch box (3 items and soup) for $3.
Find coupons from travel book if you want to visit museums,
Do as little as possible of shopping. Lexington ave is good place to get nice stuffs.

The biggest thing is to walk as much as possible if you are there for a while those taxes add up a ton! Also try not to eat very fancy, just because you are in new york does not mean you have to go to all the fancy places.

eat at little places like little pizza joints, grey's papaya.
for cheap tourism- just walk around the city. Go to central Park and walk around. Take subway rides to Brooklyn, Queens, take a ferry ride.
New York is so beautiful, it's excellent tourism to just simply walk around!

Find a buffet and eat a big, late lunch. That way you can skip dinner and just grab a snack somewhere. Also, bring along a jar of peanut butter!
