Some people understand that not everybody can afford to run out and buy a new computer. It sounds like somebody was nice and gave you this computer or you bought a used computer with your own money. I fail to understand why other's just can't comprehend why another might need to be happy with what they currently have, rather than sit and whine about what they don't have. Good for you to try and find ways to make what you have work better for you.

With that said, I am sorry to report I don't know much about the Windows Me addition. I didn't have a computer for many years, six to be exact. So, I went from a Windows 98 system to a Windows XP Home edition in mid 2005. My Win 98 was only a year old when I boxed it up and put it away because my teenage boys were getting Online to the nudity sites and running up a bill on my credit card, which they swipped from my purse. Back then there wasn't any such thing as "parental controls", either software or hardware solutions as there are today. So, my "parental" control was to box up the computer.

I am aware there are themes for all of the Windows editions. You will just need to do a search Online. You can start by going to the Microsoft websites and checking there. Sometimes you will find older items even after an edition is no longer supported by Microsoft. Certain older editions stop being supported after a while, what is called the Lifetime Cycle. You can still receive critical updates, but that is it.

However, a computer is a computer is a computer. If it gets you Online, allows you to run programs, then it is a viable peice of machinery.

I wish you luck in your search for themes, and other software to update your system. I am pleased you appreciate what you have instead of whinning about what you don't have. Too many youth these days fail to appreciate what they have. Good for you, it does my heart good to read a question from a mature person who attempts to get the most of what they own. I know I am a complete stranger to you and so you probably care less about my opinion, but there you have it anyway.

Here is a link to the free downloads area of Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

This initial page is just the beginning of all the downloads Microsoft offers. Be sure to click around the links and use the search engine there to find what you can. There are also desktop enhancements, here is a link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/desktop/default.mspx

Be sure to use the Quick Links link at the top right of each page at the Microsoft webiste. Oh, you may need a .Net Passport to access some of these pages. It is simple to get one, at the login page, click whatever wording applies for signing up for a .Net Passport. You can use your existing email account or get a Windows Live Mail account, which is free.

Good luck and enjoy your new computer!

P.S. BTW, my old Windows 98 computer went to my grown daughter who used it until she saved up for another one, then she in turn gave it to a good friend of hers who did not have a computer. That friend used it for several months until she could afford to buy a new system and in her turn gave it to a friend of hers. It has now went through six other friends and friends of friends and is currently being happily used by a child of the last friend. None of these individuals paid for it and all were very happy to get it and use it.

Best answer is bin it to be honest or upgrade to Win98. I know WinME was supposed to be an upgrade, but it doesn't get the name "Windows Monumental Error" for nothing.

As for changing it - back in the days of Win 3.1 (pre Win95) you could change it totally and very simply, but I don't think that was possible from Win95 onwards which is a pity.

There are programs that kindof let you do this - search for desktop manager - but they don't usually do it all that well. I had mine looking like a Mac once....eak.

Baby!! I am 24 so I remember the 90's better than the 80's. I loved the pop culture of my time. I actually miss the simplicity of being a kid. I miss my light up sneakers. I love Oregon Trail. I was in love with New Kids On The Block. I always wanted to get slimed on the orange couch.
