I have a 17 year old cat with ailments and am thinking of getting a puppy. The cat is very even tempered and has reacted well to other dogs. Would a new puppy send him to an early grave?

I would not get a new puppy right now. It would not be fair to your ailing, elderly cat, and I do believe it would shorten his life.

Wouldn't you want your final days/months to be spent in peace and comfort, rather than being tormented? (A young, untrained puppy is only going to want to investigate and play... it won't want to leave the cat alone.) You will have plenty of time to get a puppy after your cat is gone.

your cat would probably be pissed if you got a puppy!!

i have a 16 year old cat who is partially blind and has horrible arthritis. she tolerates our dog, mostly because he is outside all day, but hates the babies in the house, because they always chase her. She can't even tolerate most people touching her because of her arthritis.

if your cat has serious ailments, it may be better to avoid getting an energetic and time/attention consuming puppy until your dear cat has passed on.

Be prepared. I don't think it will enjoy the toying of a puppy. It will take TIME. She will hide, and may mess in places your not happy about, but it will eventually come around, when it realizes that puppy's not going to go away. I hope it all works out, and I would most likely do it. You might have your hands full for awhile.

I do not think getting a puppy would be fair or respectful to your old cat friend. He is 17 ! that's old, and deserves his peace and quiet!! A puppy would horrify him.

The best I can answer is for you to imagine how you would feel if you were 100 years old, felt bad all the time, and also had to put up with being tormented every waking moment.

i dont think i would be taking the risk. as old cats are very fragile, i think the puppy will put her into an early grave

your pup needs to be prepared to get scratched...a lot. And your cat needs to be prepped to have a really hyper little "kid" running all around it and pestering it. :P So good luck with that. Your cat might just become isolated and remove itself from the situation.

get the puppy because at 17 yrs old the cat isn't going to last much longer. at least then you will have a pet. sorry to be negative but my cat died of old age and i had to get a new one. its harder to get attached to them when you are still missing the old one. at least you will have the puppy for comfort
