The effects of catnip last 5-15 minutes and the pleasurable response cannot be evoked again for an hour or more after exposure.

The toys you buy from the store don't last very long because the catnip airs out; also they put very little catnip in those toys. If you see he is responding to the catnip by getting all excited(sniffing, chewing, rubbing it) let him play with it for awhile. When he loses interest take it away and put it in a zip lock bag.

The simplest way to give your cat the catnip experience without constantly buying toys is to just buy(or grow) 100% fresh catnip. You can buy it in the flake or pellet form. Just put some in an old soft sock(not too thick), tie a knot in it and let your cat have a ball.

Hope this helps.

It should last a few weeks at least. You can also "recharge" it after a while by squeezing it tightly and rolling it around in your hand. This will crush the dried catnip in the toy and release more of those oils and the scent that cats go crazy for. If you are good at sewing you can also make your own catnip toys very easily and cheap.

Commercially made toys, about three months (they're made in bulk and warehoused for a long while). Home made with your own catnip--up to 4 years but the first two years are the strongest smelling.
