For some Christians, based on Mt. 4:10 and 16:23
it is imitating Jesus who said "Get behind me Satan"
1. when there is a tempter trying to hinder the will of God.
2 when the right choice is difficult to obey and easy to
discard.

from Mt 5:10 & Mt. 16:23 we have the background of

There are many levels of understanding to this saying of "Get behind me Satan"

I see it as - I see you, I acknowledge you, but in this instance I trust in the higher power, so ego, get out of my way.

It is good to remember not to take the easy quick first answer that pops in your mind to a query one has.
eg. Something happens which could make you angry, the ego wants to react, the higher self needs to respond.
Take a breath and feel what this is bringing, not just say the first thing that comes into the head.
It is an understanding within yourself.
It is a learned response, which helps life flow and move more easily.
To react off the top of your head, makes life clunky and have sharp corners.
Bless you for the question.

why do people think in sexual terms all the time? Jesus was being tempted by satan in the wilderness after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. He proclaimed "get thee behind me Satan" - which is figurative!

it simply means that when you ask someone to go behind you, they get out of site. you don't see them, they are behind you. Jesus was asking satan to get lost. He didn't need the satan to tempt him like he was doing at that time.

God forgive those who twist this into all sorts of immoral proportions!

Another way of saying, not to get involved, not to take the road less travelled. To take the easy option. Peter, Jesus disciple when he heard Jesus was going into Jerusalem to meet His death, Peter tried to talk Him out of it. Hence the expression,"Get behind me Satan". Satan was using Peter to discourage Jesus making the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. Satan was trying to use Peter to block His way.

It's an address to the idea that Satan has placed a temptation in front of them and in the name of Christ, it can be removed from their path, being the son of god, name above all names etc. etc.

Because Satan is the definition of evil.
Only man is evil.
Get behind me Satan simply means - don't tempt me, or I won't be tempted to do wrong.

It was what Jesus said whilst being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. I suppose it means 'do not put temptation in front of me'
