I want to give blood, but I am really scared of needles and get all shaky and nervous when I am about to get stuck. However someone I really care about lately has needed a lot of blood, so I know I should give to help other people in the same situation. How can I get over my fear? What do you do when you get scared around needles? How can I do the right thing and make it though it without freaking myself out too much? Advice would be really appreciated.

Try not to think about the needle during the transfusion. After the initial stick, there is relatively little pain involved. While they are drawing your blood, try to think of all the good you are doing by being a blood donor. Once you overcome your fear, and do it the first time, you'll wonder why it took you so long to do something so simple, yet beneficial.

That is a hard one. Needles freak people out because we were so terrified of pain when we were kids. And we were forced to take shots under the watchful eye of loving parents. Most times, our shots were the only pain we ever felt, other than the occasional smack on the butt that we desperately deserved. The good you will do is so much more intense than the pain you will feel. Take the finger-prick and the bee-sting buddy, and enjoy the snacks afterward.

I went to a hypnotist for two sessions. It helped tremendously. I still have anxiety, but it isn't paralyzing. I can do what I have to do. I have now also given myself shots, a friend shots and my husband shots. I never could have done this before the hynotherapy.
