If you were born Jewish, you should absolutely and by all means be a proud and observant Jew. We need Jews who will 'represent', and who are willing to be Torah-observant.
If you WEREN'T born Jewish, there's absolutely no reason for you to become Jewish. We believe that "the righteous of all nations has a share in the world to come." In other words, you don't have to be Jewish to be close to G-d or to go to heaven; you just have to be righteous.
Of course, many do choose to convert to Judaism. I did. But it's something to be considered very carefully and for years. Why? When you aren't Jewish, you aren't obligated to keep the Law; you just have to be righteous, as I said earlier. Once you convert, though, you take on the obligation of the Law. That obligation is a wonderful thing--we believe that we're made holy through keeping the commandments--but it's also an awsome thing. It's not something to be done lightly.
For that reason, rabbis usually turn potential converts away three times. Only those who really want conversion end up getting it. Jews aren't big proselytizers, to put it mildly.
I personally believe that one should only convert to Judaism if they have no other choice spiritually. Once converted, though--and when born Jewish--we must love G-d with all our hearts, souls and minds...yes, THEN we should be VERY Jewish! :)
