that was before corporate America took over.

Relaxed and cheerful, like Cale and Bobby and Donnie after the '79 Daytona 500? King Richard got hot under the collar plenty of times too. Darrell Waltrip was notorious for bad-mouthing other drivers, but he wasn't the only one to do it.
It's true that there is a "youth movement" in NASCAR, sparked by Jeff Gordon's early success and driven by corporate sponsors. Young drivers barely old enough to shave are given primo rides, while less-sponsor-friendly veterans can't get a Cup ride at all. Fortunately, we can still watch them race in the Truck Series!

I'll say that to the casual fan that may be the case but "back in the day" it was the same as it is today. In fact maybe worse. There were fist fights and bad mouthing and guys yelping like a bunch of hens as well. The difference is that the media now covers every single little thing these guys do and "trys to stir the pot" when they smell something that could be a bit of a controversy. I will say this though, Jeff Gordon trying to fight a guy while he still had his helmet on is a punk move. Even if the guy starts whaling on him all he does is break his hand. I'm sure if he tried that with one of the Allisons it would have been another battle royal. You are right about one thing though...There are no more cool cowboy hats in racing! Point to you on that one!

Those were the days drivers were fan friendly.
They would sit for hours and sign autographs, and let fans take pictures and hold kids.
Today wait in line for a number, get a picture signed and if lucky a picture with the driver, unless the driver has to go some where 45 minutes after the session starts.
Sponsor friendly yes,fan friendly???????????
The good guys wear the hats.

Due to the evolution of the sport, the infusion of $$$$$ and progression of technology, sadly, those days are long gone.
