Last time I went to the dentist, I didnt have any cavities...but the time before I had like 8. I was mortified. Its been 8 months since my last cleaning and im so scared that i have cavities or gingivitis (i have had slighty bleeding when i brush too hard)...is there a way to assess myself before going to the dentist so i'm not shocked?

My best advice to you is to, floss, brush, and rinse. Every day, at least twice a day from now on if you haven't been doing so. I'm sure you aren't in danger of gum disease or gingivitis, but I'm not going to lie, it's possible for you to have a cavity if you haven't been taking care of your teeth.

Almost everyone is nervous when they go to the dentist or to the doctor, its completely normal! So if you're a little nervous, it's ok to be. Just let your dentist know that you are feeling a little anxious and to please walk you through what they will be doing. I'm sure they won't mind at all.

Take a deep breath, try to relax, and don't think of the dentist as some horrific experience. Know that by going, and keeping up with visits, that you are doing a good thing for yourself. If you keep it up, you most likely will not have major problems with your teeth.

Some people naturally have weaker teeth than others, and there are always ways to keep your teeth as nice as possible. Ask your dentist for advice specifically geared toward yourself. Don't brush so hard, and your teeth won't bleed. If you don't smoke, your chances for gum disease is so much less, so try not to smoke if you do.

Seriously, think of the dentist as a good thing, its really not as scary as it seems. I promise! I've talked myself into knowing this and now I love to go there. I only wish I could go more often than every 6 months! lol

Good luck at your visit, I'm sure it will go well! Once its over you don't have to go back for another 6 months. Whoo hoo!

If you had your teeth cleaned 8 months ago and they didn't tell you that you were in danger of gum disease then don't worry (don't worry anyway). There are steps to gum disease and gingivitis and your dentist will caution you when you are in danger.
As far as bleeding during brushing - Don't brush hard and use a soft toothbrush.
