I've heard the ridiculous excuse that motorcycles must be loud so that "they can be heard" by motorists in cars and trucks. Except that I have seen several motor scooters and even some bona fide motorcycles that do have noise dampening equipment (mufflers) and that do not sound like a chorus of jackhammers as they ride by. The argument is completely specious that these noise pollutants must be obnoxiously loud to guarantee the safety of the riders. Where are the objective scientific studies to defend such an argument that these vehicles must make such noise?

I almost always have the radio or CD player playing rather loudly when I drive, so even the disgusting sounds of these loud motorcycles don't penetrate. But I sure as hell hear them when I'm trying to relax in my home. If I drive around in my car without a muffler for very long, I will be cited. The same should be the case for these inconsiderate people on their eardrum shattering motorbikes.

In the State of Delusion, loud motorcycle and cars are legal. In the State of Confusion many Yahoo posters seem to reside in- maybe not legal- but police tolerated because they collect $ from the hearing aid people. Which state do you reside in? Confusion or Delusion? A actual state in US may have a explicit law regarding noise level 10 foor from source- the federal manufactures equipment laws say something like 92 decibles if made before 2000, 85 decibles between 2001 and 2009. Just have to call a politician every time your disturbed, give them the license number of the vehicle- or a couple complaints to a local police force that has a inspector of vehicle and wants to issue a $200.00 ticket. SO, if you reside in state of Delusion- completely legal. If you reside in some other state, then check that state vehicle inspection laws, noise limit laws and find out which politician is the district rep- call him or her instead of wasting time on Yahoo with silly rants. Teasing Alert!

Loud cars sometime are annoying, an older model muscle car should sound aggressive. I agree that some people do make too much notice with their vehicles. You may want to see if there is a notice ordinance in your area. Now with motorcycles loud pipes are 90% safety. Loud pipes save lives! Many drivers don't see bikes, and the loud pipes help to be noticed by other drivers. You may hear a bike before you see it.

the reason for these loud motorcycls is they have taken a factory exhaust and rammed an object usually a steel pipe up the exhaust and canned the baffles , which are there to dampen noise, there is no benefit to this other then becoming obnoxiously loud , to make a statement "look at me" well good luck to you retards when you lose your hearing as this procedure makes these motorcycles 120+ decibals which by the way is louder then an airplanes emission, as for the moron earlier who mentioned he has an 1100 watt stereo , when you grow up youll regret your "COOL" stereo when the most used word in your vocaabulary is " WHAAAAT"

If you tuned your car for the very best performance then it would as a side effect be very very loud e.g. a motor racing car. However I think there must be a point where the embarassment/ selfishness of the noise must outweigh any performance benefit. For some people this point is never reached because they are incredibly selfish.

Well... the LOUD motorcycle makes some sense to me because motorcyclists tend to not be seen by many of the other motorists on the road. (And they use the volume of their engine as a safety mechanism to let drivers know where they're at)

... of course, it's also just a way to announce your presence & try to act "big & powerful" while on the road.

It's all just silly posturing & posing in an attempt to make themselves feel better.
