I cannot figure out why whenever i try to correct a word that was previously typed, it begins to write over what i had perviously written. Instead of making room for the newly written word..it deletes the text next to it to make room, hence making me re-write the entire paragraph because of one mistake...is it a problem with auto formatting?

Your INSERT button (usually located in the key pad above the "Arrow" keypad) has been activated.

Just click it again.

You've accidentally put Word in Overtype mode. Pressing the Insert key is the usual way of getting into this -- and the easiest way of getting out again. If you have Word 2007, here's a way to turn off the darned Insert key forever: 1. Click the round Office button in the upper-left corner of the window. 2. Click the Word Options button. 3. Click the Advanced item on the left-hand pane. 4. Uncheck the Use Insert Key To Control Overtype Mode checkbox. 5. Click OK. Hope that helps.

Could be, or sometimes (if yer a klutz like I USUALLY am) you happened to get stuck in INSERT mode through a fat-finger act...just hit insert and see if it goes away? Or occasionally I have luck placing the cursor in the place where the correction is to be made and making darned sure I DOUBLE-CLICK before proceeding...ya have to play with it sometimes, but yep, this ain't no answer, give yer points to someone else...

In the settings you have selected overwrite instead of insert. It is a selection in the Tools/Options.

You are in over-type mode. Go to Tools and find the option to change it. Good luck.

See if your INS button is turned ON.
