So, I work for the state government and a few weeks ago they changed everyone's job titles. Our new titles are paraprofessional rather than professional. I went from a librarian to a library specialist. The pay didn't change, but they did tweak the job description and removed helping students use online and print resources, which is a major part of my job and it seems silly to remove it, but that's a non issue. I'm upset because of the job title switch. One of the reasons I took this job despite the laughable pay was so I could put librarian on my resume despite not completeing my degree. Should/ Can I use the job title I was hired with on future resumes? I just can't see myself chaning my resume to say library specialist.

I would continue using your title as librarian, especially if you have a written job offer that states your job title as librarian. Keep using the old title either way.

The employer can change job titles and job descriptions.

If you are creating a resume, then I'd just show whichever title you had longer.

Since job titles are specific to the company you work at, people looking at a resume look more at job duties than titles anyway, so it probably really doesn't matter which you put.

Most jobs as a librarian in an actual library would require a Masters degree in Library Science, although there are many other jobs in libraries that don't require that.

If there is no change in salary then why worry about what you are called . However there should have been a period of negotiation between the employer and you and your union (if appropriate) Full details of why this change is taking place should have been given as well as a reasonable time for you to respond . My guess is that there is a new manager in there trying to put their own stamp on things and changing job names is not where I would start !!
