he is suffering from fluid retention due to his chemo, which has been going on for a year now, and is in danger of developing thrombosis if he doesn't walk, but he is losing his will to fight.
He has a male nurse to help him up, but he just won't cooperate anymore. All of his functions are perfect, how can we motivate him to try and fight again?

It is up to every cancer patient to decide how much they are willing to undergo in fighting this group of diseases.

Chemo, radiation, surgery, these all take a lot out of you.

Each one of us needs to make a judgement call, based on the information available to us, how much we will gain by undertaking the treatment and balance that against what the treatment takes out of us.

I went through surgery, radiation and chemo. I am still on preventative medication to hopefulle stop a recurrance.

If/when I have to face up to metastasizing cancer, I am not sure I will be able to undertake that journey again.

If the pain and suffering of undertaking the treatment are such that the patient no longer wishes to continue the fight, then that is their decision and you have no right to force them.

You can remind them of how much you love them, and if there is a chance of recovery, tell them how much this would mean to you, but ultimatly the decision is theirs.

Don't worry son, you can tear yourself up with "what ifs" in a situation like this. I have had dogs all my life and it's never easy losing a friend, a family member. I have had to put dogs down because of the pain they were in. I've been with them at the end. It's no easier watching them slip quietly into a last sleep on a metal vet table than it is discovering they died in there sleep. The difference is they died at home, in a familiar environment, peacefully. I would choose that any time. My condolences for the loss of you friend. Just take comfort that she is now happy, pain free and has the energy she did when she was a puppy. All dogs go to Heaven.

You aren't suffering like he is. Perhaps the best thing is to accept his decision, and let him go.
Would you rather encourage him to hang on and fight, just so he can get a few more months or perhaps a year of horrible suffering?
If you love someone, sometimes you have to let them go. Especially if they are suffering...

Ultimately it's his decision, but I am religious and if you are then I suggest that you pray. Miracles happen. Just be there for him.

This is his decision. He will keep going if he thinks how he feels is acceptable. If it is no longer acceptable, he will not want to continue this.
