he has just been to the vet for a check up because I thought it might be an infection as well. He is litter box trained , as for the feet smelling like cat but I guess I cannot say since I don't smell either their butts or my shoes.

My cat has done that and i got advice from a vet. He said it could be caused by a couple of things:
1. litter box is not cleaned
2. your shoes smell like another cat...caused your cat to feel the need to mark territory
3. your cat has seen another cat (by the window or something) and feels the need to mark territory.

To fix the problem:
1.keep your cat away from windows or cats that he doesnt know
2. Spray something on your shoes to disguise smell
3. neuter your cat.
If this continues get help from a vet

I agree with some of what the other people have said. It can be due to some urinary tract problems, although I wouldn't think that he would only be urinating in your shoes-he would be going all over the place. Usually you will see him urinating small amounts frequently.
If it is behavioral, there are several things you can try. One would be to pick up your shoes, so they are not there for him to urinate in. You will want to clean them with a product like Nature's Miracle, which will get the urine smell out of them. Another thing to do would be to get another litterbox. A general rule of thumb would be 1 litterbox per cat + 1 extra. Make sure the litterbox is in a place where he feels safe using it. There are also products like Feliway that encourage cats to stay away from certain areas.
Regardless of the reason, you should talk to your veterinarian or vet tech to see what they would recommend. They will be able to ask you the right questions to determine whether or not he needs to be seen. Good luck!

Cats don't do retaliation, they don't plan revenge - those are human traits.

The shoes are the second smelliest places in the house (the litter box is #1) so sometimes they pick the second smelliest place and give it a try. Laundry baskets with dirty socks are usually #3.

He may have a urinary tract infection and he's trying to tell you. Seriously...male cats get cystitis and crystals in their urethra etc... so you really need to have him checked. It happens in females too, but not to the same extent.

When this happens, sometimes the cat feels pain when they urinate and think the litter box is causing it, so they look for another place to go. Many times that place is right in front of you...or on one of your personal belongings because they want you to realize it.

It is peeing because all cats are uncivilized little rodents. You need to beat the kitty into submission so that it understands who the boss is in the house.

He's pissed
Seriously he is sending a message so evaluate food, habits? any toys for him? is the box clean ALWAYS? Move the shoes outta reach. Mine used to pee on my roommates stuff when she pissed him off. They know what they are doing, trust me :)

Good luck!

Well, Is he "Potty trained"? is it possible maybe you haven't taught him not to pee. Second of all Cats can be terriotorial if you have a lot of neighbors with outdoor cats.

it is most likely a urinary tract infection. when my male kitten got one, he peed all over our couch, and he wouldn't stop. we went to the vet and thats what it was. so we got him "fixed" and put him on some medicine.

good luck getting the smell out!
