I've just found out that my dad found a lump and has been having all sorts of tests for prostate (prostrate?) cancer over the past month. The first set of results came back inconclusive but on Wednesday he was told he was all clear. I found out a few hours ago, it was kept from me because I suffer from extreme anxiety and I have just started a new University course so my parents didn't want me to worry. Why do I feel so worried, as if he actually does have cancer?

Because he's your dad and it was a scare.

ask your parents to be honest with you and find a way to deal with the news good or bad. Being fragile and unable to talk to is no way to be supportive to your dad.

Tell him you want to be there for him if he needs you.

You feel this way because your parents were not honest with you. This is exactly what happens when people try to 'protect' others from the truth. Even though you are an anxious person . . you would have been better off being involved from the very beginning. Now that you know you were lied to, it is hard to trust your parents to tell you the truth about what is really happening with your Dad's health.

I do not know if your parents have told you the truth even now, but they probably have.

One thing that we learned very early when dealing with cancer is to be as totally honest as possible about all that is happening. It is very hard to do sometimes.

Think of dealing with this thing as being like a - nearly - very serious road accident - you remember the sight of the other vehicle coming and the jolt as everyone brakes.

You know you are fine, and so is everyone else but it is quite a time before you stop shaking, and even longer before you stop thinking what if?!

Give it some time.

He's your father so thus he meas a lot. If your get anxiety constantly try going to a gym or doing yoga, just something to take your mind of stuff. Some people use drugs or alcohol to do this but i dont suggest it because it can seriously damage inner organs. Still, just relax and worry about yourself and school.
