You should get some before and on the day. That way even before the wedding you know you will have some pics that you like from a controlled setting (if he does digital you can see what the pics will look so you know if they are good) and on the day you should get the pics that show the real emotion of the day. You should have both, not one or the other.
I think it is good that he has offered you this.

Many brides opt for taking them month or so before the wedding for a few reasons.
1) it adds less stress on the actual day because you don't have to take time out of getting ready or time with your guest and new husband to take pictures by yourself
2) some brides like to have a few of the bridal pictures printed and framed to have at the reception.
3) you can have you at least some of the pictures taken on a perfectly clear and beautiful day, which is not guaranteed on the wedding day
4) you can have your bridal portraits done somewhere other than your wedding/reception location, like in a beautiful garden or park
5) if you are going to do "practice" hair and makeup with at the salon, then it won't be wasted
6) the photographer might not be able to be with you the entire day. If you break up the sessions, then you will still be able to get all the different pictures you want.
Some disadvantages:
-you have to spend an entire day getting all dressed up, with hair and make up too, when you are already pretty stressed
-your fiance might accidentally see you in your dress before the wedding (but highly unlikely)
-They might cost more money! Just make sure that the bridal session is part of your package and not something extra that you aren't willing to pay for.

I think that both of you are correct. Where I live the bride always takes bridal portraits a few weeks before the wedding. These pictures are just of the bride, nobody else. By doing this, the photographer has plenty of time to set the bride up in beautiful artistic poses. You can even take these pictures in other places besides the venue where the wedding will take place. The day of the wedding more pictures with the bride by herself are taken. Pictures with the groom, wedding party, and family are also taken. On the wedding day, it is very hectic and there isn't a ton of time to set up poses. The pictures don't turn out quite as good as the other ones that are taken beforehand, but they are filled with so much wonderful emotion from that day. By using both of your ideas, you can get the best of both worlds.

The reason pro photographers take bridal portraits so far in advance is to have the time to devote to shoot them, which was between two and three hours for me usually a two to three weeks before the wedding day. If you wait until your wedding day you won't have the time to get a quality amount of shots. You'll be much more relaxed when you shoot bridal shots before the wedding day than you will be on your wedding day with everything that'll be on your mind.
Your photographer will shoot pictures of you alone as well on your wedding day but the Bridal portraits are separate and for a good reason.
Your photographer is doing his job as it's supposed to be. Shoot the bridal shots before the wedding day.

The portrait taken before is usually a studio protrait with planned lighting and lots of time. Your mascara won't be runny or your lipstick smudged. Brides often display an enlargement at the reception.
Of course, your photographer will also do portraits on the wedding day. Having a formal sitting beforehand gives you a chance to wear your dress, so I would say go for it!

Your portraits are taken about a month in advance because typically a large picture of you is displayed at the reception and its also a way to take multiple pictures of you without taking so much time the day of the wedding... I know my portraits took about 3 hours... no photographer has that kind of time the day of the wedding... on the wedding day is when photos of the groups are taken... Trust me, its easier to split them up... and if your photographer is suggesting it, they're the professional
Portraits are JUST of you...

I guess it depends on how many you are talking about. If you mean the typical few of the bride and groom or just the bride then I would say to do it the day of the wedding. If you want a ton of close ups and other poses, which by the way you will never look at or use after the wedding is over, then do it ahead of time.

I think they are way more special on the day of your wedding. You're not just taking pictures of you guys all dressed up, your takingpictures to remember your "wedding day" if you take the pictures in advance, it doesn't count! Do them the day of the wedding, if you don't want your guests to have to wait, take them before the ceremony.

What? That is crazy!! Apart from an 'engagement photo shoot' that I have heard of, you only take wedding photos on your wedding day otherwise it is not special. If your photographer only wants to take your photos a month before, FIRE their *** and get someone who will do the right thing and what you want! I have never heard of such a stupid thing! If it is not on the day you are getting married, there is no point!
