I have an interview next week and I was told that I would be given a data entry and excel test. I have never done either before, can someone please explain in detail what I should be expecting? Is there any way I can practice and prepare for such tests?

Typically with a data entry test you'll be entering a lot of numbers, so you'll want to practice not just your typing, but typing numbers specifically. Also work on letter/number combinations (like license plates). You can practice and test yourself on excel at www.ExpertRating.com or at www.BrainCorp.com, and you can take a free typing test at www.TypingTest.com. You can always find more by typing "free online excel test" or "free online typing test" in Yahoo search.

Here's what I'd recommend.

First they are going to find out how quick you are at typing and how many words per minute you can type.

For data entry you'll most likely be given two columns of data and you'll need to be able to quickly distinguish if the entry in the first column is the same as the entry in the second column. For instance they may have 30 entries in each column and a couple of them might have two of the numbers switched or mistyped, etc.

Example: Are these two the same?

12325678 12326578

They are almost the same but the order of the 6 and 5 are switched so the are not the same.

They'll look at your typing speed and the number of errors that you make in regards to your speed.

As far as Excel, you might want to see what version of Excel they are using. If it is Excel 2007, I'd recommend reading the Plain & Simple book series on Excel. It is very easy to understand and goes through the basics.

If you don't know, I'd recommend studying up on the Excel 2003 version. Most companies are currently using Excel 2003. You want to get the basics of Excel down. I'd recommend the book for that:

Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step

Written by Curtis Frye.

Or the Excel 2003 for Dummies book. You should just worry about learning the basics and these are pretty good books on showing you the basics.

And of course there is nothing better than practice. So if you can get on Microsoft Excel and practice a bit on it while reading the books that would help a ton.

There are also the Video Professor cd's for Excel that are more visual oriented that you could try. If you rarely to never use a computer that may be the best way to go.

Data Entry is like typing test... if you have put the right info into the right column.

Do you have excel at home. here is what you can pratcie with data entry. Type in last name, first name, address, phone number, website blah.... and go to yellow pages, and type in some searhc, then enter the info.

As for excel, you need to do how to format, add up total etc. Go to local book store and get excel for dummy. Good luck.

request a re-test, explaining you were nervous. This is just manual skill, I know it's important, but just explain. Better to explain and retest than lose the job over this. Call them up July 5 and ask for the retest.

In addition to the above answers I also suggest learning 10-key. This entails learning to type numbers from the numberpad on the keyboard without looking at the keys.
