I bought a car few days ago...and today while I was driving I passed a school bus with flashing lights and stop signal arm. I stopped, but then continued to move with caution. There was no police at that time. I just received my driver license few days ago. I didn't mean to violate the law. Can school bus driver write down my license plate number and notify a police or dmv? I feel guilty...Thank you

I really feel guilty because of lack of knowledge in school bus passing law. When I have seen a stop arm I stopped for 2-3 seconds but then I assumed that I can continue to move slowly and with caution! I hope bus driver wasn't a jerk and didn't record my license plate number! Next time I will not make this mistake!

One more questions. If a school bus driver wrote down my license plate number(I hope not) when I will approximately receive it by mail?

not knowing is no excuse. since u've been going to school, u know better than to pass a stopped bus. by law, the driver is to report those that pass a stopped bus and turn it into the cops.

this argument will not fly in court either, and they wont be sympathtic. u are responsible to know the rules when it comes to buses. basic rules of engagement: if on a 2 lane road, every1 has to stop. if on a divided highway that has 2 lanes each direction, the direction the bus is going has to stop. at no time do u pass a bus when the red lights and stop arm is active. its a severe penalty for passing a stopped bus.

u r a naughty bunny.............stop does really mean stop!!!!!!......... they will take away ure licence easier during the earlier period after qualification..............

having said that, i would say that its unlikely that the driver would take down ure license plate, however let that be a

now that u have qualified u can decide what sort of a driver u r gonna b, and if u r gonna 'cut corners' [like u confessed to] then sooner or later 'they' r gonna get u!!!!!!!!!!

i am speaking as a driving instructor/ driver trainer in the london, england, and i must confess that we dont have that specific stop law when passing school buses, so that actual problem doesnt arise here, but the principles r the same, and as a piece of professional advice, i would advise

A) sticking to the basics like u have been taught [presumably],

B) think about getting an experienced driver sit in with you for a while yet whilst u r gaining valuable experience at this early stage

good luck

Laws in all 50 states require that drivers stop when the red lights are flashing indicating that the school bus is loading or unloading passengers. It is never legal to pass a school bus from behind when the red lights are flashing, and it is generally illegal to pass such a school bus when traveling in the opposite direction. In a few states, it is legal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights when traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway. The school bus is the only vehicle other than police and fire/rescue vehicles that can legally stop traffic.

You do not say where you live. The law is different for different states. Some states will send you a citation, some states will send you a warning letter. The best thing to do is to pay attention around school buses and do not pass them when their lights are flashing. The lights are there to stop traffic so the kids can cross safely.

Yes, I've seen them do it a number of times. But, that doesn't mean that you'll get a knocking on your door unless they were an off duty police officer.

My question, if you saw the flashing lights, knew you were supposed to stop, why did you pass it? You say you feel guilty and I think you should. The flashing lights means to a kid that all is stopped and safe to cross the road and then you pass. You're lucky in two respects: No injuries and no police.

My advice, stay behind school buses and when the stop sign is on and lights flashing, don't pass.

keep that stuff up one day you'll go to jail
since you just got your license you'll be glad to know your skills
are not good and have jut taken a bad turn today a school bus
tomorrow red lights one day you may even run over a kid playing
in a parking lot
moral =slow down be patient look around at "the big picture"

be safe

You stopped. You did what you were supposed to. That means you know the law.

You moved (with or without caution) because there wasn't a copper around. And you feel guilty.

Why? Because you are.
You initially followed the law, then when there wasn't a cop, you broke it. How can you say you didn't mean to?

From the sound of it you recognize your mistake and hopefully will not do it again. If you get a ticket you will just have to handle it. If you don't get a ticket count yourself real lucky, this time.

If the Bd was a jerk they recorded your license info and reported it to the cops by now. However, I don't think you'll be in too much hot water so long as you show empathy for your mistake. Remember not to pass school buses with flashing red lights!
