i adopted a four year old pomeranian that turned out to be pregnant which is okay withe me. I hve found homes for all but i am thinking of giving her away or putting her up for adoption. it has been hell trying to potty train her she hasnt learned anything is she too old to learn? my moms really tired of stepping on her pee or finding her poop everywere i tell my mom to be patient but she is far from that she keeps pressuring me to teach her i'm trying my best, my pomeranian would be ideal if she could just learn where to go. I don't want to give her up but i dont see it getting any better. my mom tells me i should just put it up for adoption and get one of the puppies...the question is should I?

There is no age limit on a dogs learning abilities... Have you tried to crate train her at night, take her out more often after playing, meals, a few times before bed, right away in the morning, talk to a dog trainer in your area see if they offer a free one time class on potty training i no the pet smart i work at does.... It takes time but there is something that isn't being done correctly on you and your mom's behalf..

You have to go back to square one with the adult dog and start out with the potty training just as you would a puppy. Take her out every hour to start with for the first couple of days then maybe every couple hours until she learns that she's to do her pottying outside. Give her lots and lots of praise when she goes outside. When she has an accident in the house and you catch her in the action, tell her no and then take her outside. Do not put her nose in it or spank her this won't teach her anything but to fear you. If she has an accident and you didn't see her do it, don't tell her anything just put her in another room and clean up the mess (never let her see you clean up the messes - I forgot why but I know it makes it harder to get them potty trained if they see you clean up after them). Confine her with baby gates, or some other method, to an area such as the kitchen or laundry room (somewhere without carpet) when you can't keep watch over her and when she is left home alone.

Also make sure you clean up all messes thoroughly or she will return to those spots - I like to use spot shot or urine erase

Just remember the 3 C's
Consistency - taking her out often
Confinement - when you can't keep 100% watch on her
and Clean up - clean up all accidents thoroughly

Your dog is definitely not too old to learn. Inside tip, majority of little dogs are a pain in the *** to potty train and if she's been allowed 4 years of bad habits it will take a lot of time.

Have you tried litter box training? This works really well for some dogs.
Just make sure you get the right kind of litter.
i.e.dogs tend to eat the litter so get paper pellets that are digestable.

Also, be militant about taking her out on a regular schedule. i.e. first thing in the a.m., 20 minutes after she eats, after she wakes from a nap, after she plays, right before you leave her alone, as soon as you get home, and right before bed.

Well, I am potty training a puppy right now and my mom is the same way. My friend has trained a 3 year old dog before. She said she took the dog out about every 4 hours, and everytime they ate. She finally learned. You can buy spray that you spray at a specific place (potty pad, newpaper) and they will be drawn to that place. Good luck

What makes your mom think puppies come house trained? However bad your dog is, a puppy will be way worse, they have smaller bladders, especially being a toy dog and will have loads of accidents until they reach 6 months or so. Keep training your dog, maybe if you find the task too huge you could ask your mom to let you hire a trainer for a week to help out? It may not cost as much as you think.

If you are at the end of your rope with trying to train her, then the best thing to do is to put her up for adoption. They have homes all around for specific breeds as well as all types of dogs. Visit PetFinder.com to see some places you cabn take her for adopting her out to another family. You can also try a doggie boot camp if you have the money. They can keep her for a week her so to get her started on "going" in the right place.

Good luck!

Firstly, did you have momma spayed after the pups were weaned? I hope you did. I think it's awesome you found homes for the pups, but you have to make sure she doens't get pregnant again.

For the training, I think obedience training or internet research. Dogs are creatures of habit. Get her on a schedule so she knows at 8:00 a.m. it's walk, pee, poop, back home for food, and the same thing at night and maybe a couple of walks in between. There are resources out there for training a dog, do some research, go to the library or on the internet. Good luck and thank you for taking care of that dog when she needed it most.

If you have a PetSmart in your area, try one of their potty training classes.

Potty training is hard no matter what age, but puppies are just like babies. You'll have much more training to do besides just the potty thing! And puppies chew on EVERYTHING! I'm sure your mom would rather put up with pee than ruined shoes or cabinets (my puppy is chewing on the baseboards and the edges of our cabinets. really anything she can get her mouth on.)

Just give your dog a little more time, and be persistent!!

You need to get a book on house training your dog. The most important part of house training is being persistent. That will require you to take your dog out EVERY TIME she wakes up, EVERY TIME after eating. When she does her business outside, shower her with praise. Everyone in the family must take part, but if it your dog you must take the majority of the responsibility. Have you taken her to the vet to check out possible urinary tract infections? If not, do so. Good luck. You can do it! Remember stay calm, no yelling.

do you keep her on a regular schedule? you didn't indicate if you have tried crate training.

she is not to old to train. try doing something different from what you are doing now. try to schedule her bathroom times so that she knows where to go. also try to clean the areas she has gone on with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle cleaner. once you take the scent out, she wont go there.
crate training is good for her. this teaches her not to soil her "home".
