My 8 month old great dane has been to the vet 2x.. once when we got her in may, and just about a month ago. The 1st time we ran blood samples, and they said she was anemic. She's pretty skinny, and sometimes I'm afraid people will think I'm starving her!! Just want to see if anyone else had this problem, and whether their danes (or other breed) grew out of it when they stopped growing so darn fast. That's what the vet said would probably happen..

oh, and in the picture, you can't see the way her hips stick out all that well.. and she's much bigger now, and more ribby than that!

I feed her Innova Large breed. She does not have wormies, as she recieves Interceptor monthly.

I work for the SPCA as an ACO, so I get free vet care.. they have take stoolies to see if she's clean.. all 3 of my dogs are clean and clear of worms. Interceptor kills intestinal parasites as well, BTW. Also, my other 2 pups are on a raw diet, and the vet tech said my dogs have the cleanest stool she's seen in a long time.. lol.

Vet checked for coccidia as well.. as it would have been seen in the fecal. She did consider it a possibility, tho.

Oh.. and if it matters, she does not lack in energy or anything.. she just can't gain weight!!! Could it be because she plays a lot with my 2 pit bulls? I give her free access to the food, so she eats all she wants.

I'd talk to your vet about why she might be anemic, and what to do for it. I'd also take a hard look at your food and feeding habits.

She may have free access to the food, but how much is she really eating each day? If you can't say for sure, you need to move her to specific meals 2 or 3 times per day (esp with her weight problem) until you get this figured out. Maybe move her to a food with higher calorie content for now?

I feed my 4 mo old dane pup Canidae All Life Stages. He's getting 2 C- three times per day, and I may increase it soon. He's skinny (but not as bad as he was before). They should be lean, but well covered. You don't want to see hip bones poking out on top, or all their ribs ( except the last one "clearly").

You don't want to let her gorge in one big meal, this can lead eventually to bloat (the stomach stretches and twists, the dogs can die a horrible death if you don't get her to a vet ASAP). Free feeding is a really bad idea for a dane.
Good luck!

Your vet should be running additional tests to find out what is causing the anemia, there are many causes...this is not normal no matter how fast they are growing. Also contact the breeder to see if their is a history of problems in her lines.
Even though you have your puppy on a heartworm prevenative get a stool sample in to the vet and get a fecal done. While a heartworm preventative prevents some types of worms in addition to heartworms it doesn't get all types.
Yes Interceptor does kill SOME intestinal worms but not all types..was your dog checked for coccidia?

I have an 8month old Great Dane pup. He is in perfect weight.
He was also anemic 2xs. I put him on a vet supplement called HiVite drops. It is an iron supplement. After 2 treatments, he was fine.

Anemia can also be caused by Hookworms, make sure your pup does not have those.

Also it is SO crucial that a great dane of all breeds gets the proper nutrition and a good diet,
What are you feeding her?
