I have a canon 20d and a canon 70-200mm 2.8l usm IS lens and am looking for a reasonably priced and sturdy tripod and/or monopod for this. Any recommendations on brands and stores on where to buy would be greatly appreciated.

Manfrotto/Bogen or Gitzo are the most popular among professionals with the latter being the most expensive. Any reputable camera shop would sell the Bogen and you can also find them used on eBay.

You have received several good answers. All the tripods suggested are good choices.

However, I always suggest that you make sure the tripod "fits" you. If you're 6' tall and the tripod only extends to 5' then you'll be stooped over trying to use it. I know some will say "Well just extend the center column" but that's not really a good idea. It literally negates the benefits of your tripod. Why? How? Because having 5 or 6 pounds camera and lens and tripod head sitting on top of a fully extended center column creates what is called a "moment arm". Think of a heavy door on stiff hinges. The farther away from the hinges the easier it is to push the door open. Your camera and lens sitting 18" to 24" up in the air are far away from the "hinge". The closer you get to the hinges the harder it is to push the door open. Raising the center column a couple of inches is fine. Using it fully extended isn't.

Another item I've had in my camera bag for many years is a right-angle finder. It attaches over the viewfinder and Canon probably has one in their catalog. I use it with the tripod since looking down into it is usually easier than trying to maneuver my eye behind the viewfinder. Its also used when I'm shooting from low angles and/or macro photography.

Simple answer:

Bogen 3021BPro + Bogen 486RC2 head for $236
or
Bogen 3021BPro + Bogen 488RC2 head for $274

If you want lighter and you can afford to pay more than $235 to 297 then check out the carbon fibers from Gitzo.

I use the Bogen 681B monopod with the same 486RC2 head. But you can try and see if a 679 or a 680 fits your needs too.
