I have just spoken to my teenage grandson on the phone, and when I ask him if he enjoyed his holiday to France, all he said was "Yeah."
In my books, yeah is not a word, and anyone with half a brain cell knows it and doesn't use it. I'm awfully worried for him, even though, when I started shouting at him as a result of what he'd said my daughter told me to calm down, taking the receiver off him. Is usage of the aforementioned affirmative a sign of stupidity - does anyone agree with me, or like my daughter says, am I overreacting?

Maybe you are overreacting, as "yeah" (and "hey", I would say) is all one hears every day on american films and TV, so everybody has got used to it - even I as a foreigner. Besides, teenagers are not famous for being very explicit with their feelings or very talkative to adults, especially relatives, so a monosyllable answer is often the best they can offer. Try to reach out to your grandson, I guess it is a big step, but it is us adults who should make the effort to approach them.

Yeah.....LOL
Nanny you have to understand that social skills are not a big thing these days, that's why we all chat and offer opinions in places like this!!!All those taboo questions you would never ask your friends get answered and asked here. You see kids today they text and email so there is no need to talk.
Count yourself lucky he wants to speak to you at all, most teenagers would die rather than speak to Nanny!!! Tomorrow go out and get yourself a mobile phone, ask the person in the shop to show you how to text and you will be the coolest Nan in the world and I bet you'll learn all his juicy secrets when he texts you by accident!!!
Have fun xxx

You avatar displays a youngish grand-mother. Surely you have not forgotten the songs of your adolescence. The rot got in the 1960s.....
Now , how does the song go.....? Oh, yes....
"I love you, yeah, yeah, yeah...." by a group of youngsters from Liverpool called "The Beattles". Remember?
They did well out of it, so I would not get too concerned about your grandson's mental powers. Out of acorns mighty oaks grow.
He will be a billionaire in forty years.

Yes I do think the current generation is a bunch of invalids they have grown up with the latest technology(video games, computer,tv ETC)and it has made them lazy. But the english language has changed alot and the usage of the word yeah doesn't consider you stupid.I think you are over reacting to a very petty argument.

It's 'cause the English language has evolved, and you haven't. Buy a new dictionary and you'll see.
Why are you worried about him? Because he has a modern vocabulary? Get with the times granny!

His IQ should be based on more than saying "yeah".
He may not have wanted your communication at that time for some reason (pre-occupied perhaps)?
Don't condemn him!
