Traditional braces (silver), Clear (Ceramic), Gold, and lingual (behind the teeth, not many docs do them anymore). They all have different brands just like any product making some better than others depending on the type the doctor chooses for many different reasons. Consult with the doctor about what kind they use and why if you are curious. There is also Invisalign which is "braces without braces" as you are probably aware. I would go for the traditional if you don't care about looks, the orthodontist has more direct control. With the invisalign, its through the computer and you never really know what you may get even if they ask specifically. Not a lot of direct control with that option.

Well I used to work for an orthodontist so I know first hand. There are gold (typically scary looking and more pricey), metal, and clear. The clear ones are VERY fragile and stain very easily. Some people think they are a good option because you can't see them, but the truth is that it looks like you would have a lot of plaque or something on your teeth. They look ok for a few days then become very stained. They are also known to break and this can be hazardous to your mouth and digestive system. Your best bet is you stick with the plain-old-ugly metal braces. Just remember that you aren't the only person out there that has them and that you will be AMAZED on how amazing your teeth look along the way and after you get them off. You can also just stick with silver or black "o-rings" around the brackets that keep your wires in place. i find the black rings made my teeth look whiter. Getting braces was the best decision I have ever made and I hope you will take my advice into consideration.

Yes there is. There is the 'normal' brace which allows you to have coloured elastics wrapped around them to give you a fun look, and there are what they call 'Speed Braces' that are just plain silver, but are a decent size smaller. If you are trying to decide which you would like to have, i would suggest talking to an orthodonic profession and ask them. Differrent types of braces are used for different things.

Speaking from experience I know there are two major types:

1) Clear also known as Invisible braces, with these you cannot chose the color of your elastics they appear as a thin silver line across your teeth.

2) Silver with these you have the option of changing your elastics at the ortho's to various colors every 6 weeks or so.

I've also heard of braces that are placed behind the teeth called lingual or something...

Yeah. There are. Basically the regular and least expensive kind:bracets (usually they are metal but sometimes you can get clear plastic). And then there are clear retainer-like devices called invisline that aren't connected to your teeth. I think these are more expensive.
