I have never been in an ikea store but I just looked at a catalog and most of the items look pretty cool. I did notice that they say you must put most of the items together yourself so that made me wonder about the qualtiy of the furniture. If anyone has any good input or some horror stories please let me know. Thanks.

Yes and no. I think for the price you get a very high quality piece of furniture... it's like shopping at H&M, you don't expect it to last for more than a couple of years, but it's in style and looks cute!

If you take care of your stuff you can keep it for up to 5 years for most things and be in good shape. If you're looking to make a more long-term investment, then see it just as that - an investment, and spend a little extra cash on something nice.

Otherwise, just be prepared for a loooooooooong day when you go to IKEA. It's fun but very exhausting.

Ikea Quality

From my personal experience on anything I have bought from IKEA is pretty damn great quality. I have bought kitchen accessories, contemporary lamps, TV stand, Bar table, and coffee table, etc., and I must say that I am very very pleased with my purchase. The Bar Table is made out of real wood and has not wobbled once. The TV stand I bought was 99 bucks and everyone always thinks it was far more expensive than that due to the detail and quality it has. Same goes for my 35 dollar coffee table that matches my dark wood tv stand. I think my apartment looks great and everyone thinks all the furniture we bought from IKEA would be in the thousands when we spent no more than 300 on everything. The only down side to IKEA is that you have to put everything together. Nothing you can't do if you dedicate a good night to it and have a drill to assist you when screwing things in. (I believe that poor assembly may also play into many people's complaints of the quality. If you don't put it together well then of course it'll fall apart. Just make sure to get a drill to help you with screwing and so on). Other than that it's cheap, but I wouldn't say cheap quality. Like others have said it may also depend on what you get, but I am very happy with every single purchase I have ever made from IKEA and will always turn to them when in need of new furniture if I were to get a bigger place. Can't get any better than a nice contemporary look less than half the price of other stores.

people have strong feelings on IKEA, whether good or bad. I worked there for 10 years and do feel that there is a ladder of quality. Their goal is to provide furniture for the many of good quality, nice design and excellent function. You do get what you pay for there, so be mindful of materials and ask questions. Sofas can be $199 or $1999. Depends on materials. My house is full of furniture and household accessories there. My favorites are the kitchens and the artwork. They are very socially and environmentally conscious and try new things. Plan to spend a day there and eat in the restaurant. It's a fun experience! You are welcome to email me about certain things you're interested in and I can give you a little scoop about what to expect.

Some of it is, but not all. I agree that it all LOOKS cool, but if you go for the cheaper models of equivalent pieces, you'll most likely be buying something made out of pressboard wood instead of real wood. But they do sell real wood furniture as well. For many people, the pressboard works just fine if you don't abuse or overload it. We had a pressboard entertainment center that lasted over 3 years before we got a more durable, nicer-looking model, and it was still garage-sale sellable.

I must caution you about the lamps, though...their cheaper lamps are cheaper because they use weird type of light bulbs that you can only find easily in the Ikea store they came from. Still, all the lights we've gotten from there have lasted at least a couple of years with their bulbs, so I still wouldn't call them a ripoff...just make sure you buy at least one spare bulb for each lamp you get.

And one more thing...if you're going to visit a store, visit the restaurant...you can get the BEST meal deals there, and excellently priced swedish fare!

It's an okay start. However, I wouldn't except much of their furniture to last very long. For cheap furniture, try to buy direct. You save money, without sacrificing the quality.

I really like the way a lot of Ikea'a furniture looks, too. I've seen them in person at the huge "Texas Size" store in Houston and they look nice then, too, except for a few, which looked better on-line. Overall in my opinion, it's a gamble to buy Ikea's furniture on-line. You really have to see it in person. Some of their couches look great online (and in person), but once you see the :"year old" couches on a place like craigslist, you can't believe how bad it looks.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/dOHHk
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
