A bible thumper in my family informed me that Catholics are not Christian. I laughed. A Christian in my opinion is a person who believes in Jesus Christ and accepts him as their savior. Last time I checked...Catholics believed that.

As a fundamentalist, I gotta agree with your wholeheartedly. Many Catholic doctrines are other then biblical, but God looks at your heart. If you trust in Jesus for your salvation, you're a Christian. Simple as that.

Some members of my Family used to say the same thing that Catholics are not Christians. The reason they believe this was because they had heard that Catholics Worship Mary, saints & statues. (which is a total misunderstanding) When I decided to become Catholic some members of my family did not like this, till I sat down & explained to them that Catholics do not worship any one other than God. Praying to Mary or the saints is nothing more than asking them to pray for us. like how I would ask you to pray for me or how you would ask me to pray for you. We do not pray to statues or do any of that weird stuff that some people think we do. Seems like there is a lot of people who hate Catholics so much that they try to twist what our church teaches so that we look like some thing we are not. In reality we are Christians just like any one els . And yes we believe in Jesus Christ and accept him as our savior. Any one who says differently has not study Catholicism.

*Cool facts
From what I have read the first leader of The Catholic church was the apostle Peter. (Which I think is pretty cool)
The Catholic Church was the one who first decided which books would be placed in the first Bibles.
The Catholic Church was the only Church till the 1500s when Martin Luther started the Protestant movement.

Its sad that there are so many misconceptions & misunderstanding between Protestants & Catholics. Mostly likely if your family member were to learn what the Catholic church really teaches that person would feel differently. (Note When it comes to what Catholics believe get your information from the source, do not believe any thing just because some one says so.)

I hope this helps to answer your question.
God bless

Yes Catholics are Christian.

Thank you for your support.

Most non-Catholic Christian denominations accept Catholics as Christians. A very few do not.

A dictionary would say that a Christian is someone professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.

Catholics would fit this definition.

In the Nicene creed, from 325 C.E., Catholics profess:

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made.

For us and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.

On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are baptized as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

We truly are spiritually "born again," we just don't usually use those words.

For a complete description of what Catholics believe, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/index.htm

With love in Christ.

I find MORONS that say that as idiots. Your protestant religions are ALL spin-offs of Catholism. Many times bible thumpers are nothing more than overly glorified Sunday school teachers that have nothing better to do with their time than read the bible. In the bible it say those with out sin cast the first stone, and it also says judge not least ye be judged. Any christian that says that all other religions are going to sin are condeming themselves to that very same place, since 1) we are ALL borne into sin, and 2) they are judging other faiths.

A Christian is one that believes in Jesus Christ, born of the VIRGIN Mary, who died for our sins on the cross - plane and simple. Salvation does NOT mean saying I'm a born again Christian, BUT how well you live your life to God's plan.

Yes Alexis, we are. Would you point out to your bible thumper that Suleyman1{The Magnificient} an Ottoman Emperor poured millions into the Protestat movement to undermine the Pope and his power in Europe. Protestants exist only because of a great Moslem leader. Now I ask them: Which is more Christ like?Pax.

You are correct...they are one of many denominations of the Christian faith. They claim a direct (unverifiable) liniage of Popes back to St. Peter, whom they claim was the founder of the Cathllic tradition.

Of course, the various Orthidox denominations also make a "direct liniage" claim too. None of them are any more verifiable than any other.

It is Protestant hatred, long rooted in the Reformation and perpetuated through the conseravtive evangelicals, that continues the myth that despite worshipping God and Jesus the Catholic faith is somehow not Christian.

For the record, I'm no fan of the Catholic faith either. I just feel that when someone is critical of something the proclaimed facts should be accurate. As opposed to the virulent propaganda espoused by the loudest and craziest among us.

A Christian - one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ. In Europe Catholics and Christians are one in the same and they don’t argue over this like just people in the states do. The Catholic Church is the “original” Christian church. Every religion has its own sects/denominations that have varying beliefs. Not to say that some of their specific beliefs cannot be questionable I think that is true for any religious group. Just because someone has different beliefs/opinions than you does not mean that they’re wrong, not saved and going to hell etc… The important thing in my mind for a Christian is knowing and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. I know plenty of Catholics that have that, saying that they’re not Christian is not fair and makes no sense. Anyone, (Catholics, Protestants, Mormons etc…) included can get too caught up in the rules of their own religious doctrine and miss the point of having Jesus in their life.

I think in general, people that claim to be Christian (or whatever faith) get so caught up with anger, hate and simple misunderstandings that they don’t want to think of themselves in the same group as someone they just don’t understand.

So many people are anti-Christian because they think we are supposed to be perfect and act exactly like Jesus.

NEWS FLASH:

Christians are still human, and none of us will ever be able to be perfect like Jesus was.

Please stop expecting us to. We try to live like he did, and when we fail, we have redemption, Catholics have it as a Sacrament. We endeavor to live better and amend our lives when we do fail, but we do fail.

And to answer the question, Christians are those who believe in the Divinity of Jesus, and yes Catholics and Protestants BOTH believe that.

Peace be with you all.

My dear friend, whether it is Catholics, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Budhist, if a person is walking in the ways of Jesus Christ is called only Christians. If a person named as "John", but he is not walking in the ways of Jesus means he is not a Christian. Love your enemy, Matthew 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies[3] and pray for those who persecute you,...Luke 6:27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Those who are doing the above are true Christians. Ok.

I find it amusing when other sects of Christianity claim Catholicism isn't Christianity, while at the same time they're holding a Bible which was put together by the Catholic Church.

Christianity is the religion that, in a nutshell, focuses on Jesus as described in the Gospels. That is the one thing that you can certainly say distinguishes Christianity from all other religions. Catholicism is one of many sects that fit this description.
