Those who actually believe that the world was created by a supernatural skydude find it more comforting to believe that the world was created for us humans, as we are (as far as we can tell) the only species on the planet with sentience.
It's uncomfortable for most of them to contemplate the actual evidence, and realize that the planet was obviously created for the beetles and ants - which outnumber us in population, species diversity, ecological diversity, and pure biomass.
As for atheists who misunderstand evolution, and believe it to be some sort of method of creating 'perfectly adapted' creatures, or some sort of ladder of progress, that's almost sadder than the theists.

I think that this is one of the main reasons that religion exists in the first place. Humans are egotistical by nature and like to believe that we are more important than other species. Monotheism teaches that we were made by an omnipotent being who loves everyone and takes interest in each one of us personally instead of believing we are here by natural causes.
One reason I think theists usually don't care too much about preserving the environment is that they believe in a second coming. There is a set date that the savior will return, and this world is only temporary. If you believe that, there is really no reason to think in terms of where the earth will be thousands of years from now. Also, I have found that the majority of religious people don't see overpopulation as being an issue at all. This may be because the church denies that there is a problem because they encourage their members to have a lot of kids, thus increasing their numbers. When I google overpopulation, I always find a lot of Christian sites that say it isn't a problem and never will be. Their main argument for that is how much unused space we still have which just shows that they either don't understand the problem or are ignoring it, because overpopulation has little to do with space and more to do with limited resources.
I've never met an atheist that believes that evolutions purpose was to create us, so I can't really comment on that one. Most atheists realize that the universe is indifferent to us and that we aren't really more special than any other living creature because we'll soon enough be rotting in the ground like they are.

peace be upon you
why people escape from the nature?
they want to do the wrong and don't want to receieve their punishment from the God , and to make themselves comfortable , they say no God , the easy choise and convince themselves with it.
The God when create humans ,The God put the mind inside his head to differentiate between the right and the wrong.
Life is a test and we have to deal with it in the right way to survive.
The God create the world to run on a certain system ,and only the God control it.
may be this answer has no relatioship with your question , but i wanted to say this now and here , forgive me if i couldn't give an answer as i am not atheist.
when we thought we above nature , and can create modern technology ,we destroy the clean pure environment.

It is very disturbing. At one time dinosaurs ruled the earth, and humans were not even thought of. We always go around trying to figure everything out when really, the big question-Why do we exist?-is never answered. Also, what gives us this ability to think about complex ideas?????

Everyone should do their part in protecting the earth. I'm not sure why you would think beliefs or religion would have anything to do with it. Globalization, industrialization, pollution, etc. is not specific to any religion or non-religion.

Hmmm ... God made this world for our enjoyment. We're aren't perfect and God knows that. Jesus wouldn't have had to die for us otherwise.
We are above nature, but with that position comes much responsibility. We are to good stewards of all that god has given us.

It appears to have been made for insects and rodents, not to mention viruses and bacteria. They will be here long after we're gone.
