Hi .. I'm a 21 y/o guy ( just turned 21 yesterday ) and I got a problem. Since always , I've wanted to become a great musician / singer ( for a living ).
The music I study is Cuban Music , Salsa Brava .. my Idol being Hector Lavoe..
But right now I'm going to college taking IT , and I don't have any motivation AT ALL for doing it... I've been wasting years by not doing anything at school
Should I quit school and hope to become a musician , or should I suck it up and finish college ( like my parents want me to ) so I can get a "real" degree ?
I know they love me and want the best for me , and I know it's best for me too , but the motivation just isn't there ...

Well making a living is possible playing music full time, your chances of a stable GOOD living aren't that great. For now, why not do both? Get a band together and play locally, making some bucks on the weekends, etc, and by the time you graduate your band should be tight and ready to hit the road... and you'll have that degree to fall back on later if you decide to use it.

My answer depends on several factors 1) are you paying for your schooling, or are your parents? 2) do you LOVE to make music? Would you do it whether or not you made money at it? Whether or not people liked it or thought you were good?
If you're paying for the school, you can drop out whenever, and assuming your grades meet any standards for this, you could go back if you ever needed to. On the other hand, if it is your parents who are paying for it, and especially if you only have a year or two left, it may be worth it to get the degree so you can get a job in the IT field while you pursue your music career. I can say from experience that it is not easy to break into the scene legitimately. That's why I'm not a full time musician at this point. I have bills to pay and they don't wait for 2 months between gigs.
Also consider if you are able to relocate to a place where your genre has a wider audience base, or where your record label may end up being. Sometimes they cover the cost to relocate, but not always.
Above all, only make music because you love it. Not because you want to be famous or make money (I'm not assuming that's the case here, just stating a very important point) because most good musicians aren't famous until years after they break into the business.
Finally, if you decide to become a musician in the long run, know how to market yourself. Have a demo and press kit made, create a website and/or a page on a free networking site like Myspace Music. And always be aware there is more to learn and more to know about any kind of music. Good luck with everything!

why not do both... get a degree in music. It will make you a stronger and smarter musician while opening opportunities and forming connections. I should know, I have a bachelor degree in music performance and a masters degree in music education, and I've never regretted it. The biggest mistake anyone could make would be to give up education. Music degrees are real degrees, too! If you are truly talented, there are scholarships, grants, and assistantships available to you. You might even be able to work for the college and earn a salary.

Depends on who paying for college. If mom and dad are paying, then you listen to them. If you are paying out of own pocket, you decide.
Making it as a musician will never bring you a lot of money, but life is not always about the money.

It depends on how you want to live. I see it as realistically one of two options. You quit school and leave the security of convention behind you and are willing to fight your way through, atleast you'll know you're alive. Or, you fight for the next few years and drone through with the option to sing for your supper, but it's not a necessity.
I don't know your parents but mine would always rush to my rescue, there are too many unknowns.

ok here's the sheet man. In Canada, there is NO future in music. Y ou do it because you love it, You'll be broke your whole dam life. Your teeth will fall out, and everyone wants to hurt you because they think you have more than you do.
Find a job that will pay your bills (nicely) and play music for the love in your soul.

I think you should finish school and get a good job and in your spare time try to become a musician and if it doesn't work out stick with your job.
