Depends on what's being taught.
If a child is being taught that any religion but the one they are raised in is "false religion" then, yes, that can be a kind of brain-washing. Works just as well with Atheism.
I don't have any children, but I intend to marry my lover and raise a child some day. If my lover stays the same one as I have now, obviously the child will be raised in a syncretic household (he's Hindu, I'm an Hellenic polytheist), and that both religions are right in the sense that they gave his other daddy and myself a meaningful relationship with a higher power. He'd be free to believe whatever he wants to as an adult, and while I'd hope that if I did right by my Gods then my child would maintain the religious practises he was taught, I would also know that this is something he would have to come to on his own, if he's meant to come to it.

"brainwash" is a pretty subjective term. All parents "brainwash" simply by the act of parenting. Parents can brainwash their children to fight and never listen to what they are told from a young age too.
Athiests brainwash their children that there is no god, while believers brainwash theirs that there is a God. So what you are suggesting is that we remove the freedom to believe in God, and then every child will have to believe as you do. Don't you think that would be brainwashing?

I absolutely disagree. That's like saying oh a child shouldn't be taught english that's thinking for her or morals. I was raised in a . . . bad environment lets call it that. . . but proverbs 22:6 says and I paraphrase teach a child and they won't grow up to be spoiled, useless things. If you don't teach a child how are they supposed to learn ? How are they supposed to understand?

I think it depends on the approach. My kids are involved in my religion. They are obviously exposed to it on a lot of levels. Its a big part of my life. BUT I also take them to UU church and we talk about ALL religion. If they choose another path, I have no problem with that. Or no path at all. So I am religious but I don't think I brainwash my kids at all.

Of course I disagree.
Ephesians 6:4 -- Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
I could turn it around and accuse you of child neglect if you don't raise your children to love and worship God. But I don't because I try not to disrespect others. Too bad you can't.

toogethr, you must be very busy reporting all those "abusive" parents to the police, aren't you?

Only if the parents do not allow them to learn anything about beliefs other than the ones the parents follow. My parents were more religious than a lot of people, but I was exposed to other viewpoints as well as theirs...
And my religious beliefs as an adult are different than what my parents taught me....

Disagree. I was raised by Christian parents and I still became an atheist. Only recently did I wise up and turn to Jesus. When I did I found a relationship quite unlike the religion I thought I had been exposed to as a child. It's a whole other ballgame when it stops being religion and starts being personal.
When you accuse Christian parents of brainwashing kids, you underestimate and insult the kids.
Edit: The guy above makes an excellent point too.

yes, but when they become teenagers they automatically question and revolt against everything they been brainwashed into as kids (well, at least most do). So it evens out.
And you could brainwash kids about atheism as much as about religion or any other subject. You brainwash them if you don't teach them to think.

Unless you consider everything said or shown to a young child to be brainwashing.
