Its not necessary, just a nice touch. You will have to be really mindful of how you address the outer though, as the inner usually is the envelope followed as to who is invited to the event, you will have to do this on the outside though.

Okay...I just got done with my wedding...however, my invitations did not come with an inner envelope...I wrote on the envelope Mr & Mrs John Doe and on some put Mr & Mrs John Doe & Family...The invites that I didnt put and Family on caused a little confusion...it's totally up to you...if u want something FORMAL then yes u need and inner envelope and if you decide not to use an inner envelope make sure to put Family on those that you know how family that will be attending also...There really are no stipulations unless it is FORMAL FORMAL FORMAL...It doesnt matter how much money u spend or what the rule is...do what u want...people are not going to say,"Oh look she didnt put an inner envelope with hers, what was she thinking!" I think you should do what you want to do!!!

NO it is not.
I am making pocketfolder invitations and the pocketfolder actually serves as the "inner envelope". I am putting the family names (that would normally be on the inner envelope) on a seal to close the pocketfolder.
My friend you also used pocketfolders a few months ago for her invites just wrote all that information on the outer envelopes and that was also fine..

Technically, yes, you are supposed to have both. The outer envelope has the mailing address to the household. The inner envelope designates who in the household is invited (like just Jack and Jane, or Jack and Jane, Timmy and Sue). If you don't have an inner envelope, will people think differently of you...they shouldn't, and if they do, then they are just petty.
So, get it if you can. But if you can't I wouldn't pull my hair out over it. Just get the invites out on time!

You don't have to have anything you don't want. It's your day after all. If it's more trouble to find the inner envelope, I say skip it. However, I do know of a site-- envelopemall.com --that has an amazing range of envelope sizes. You just might find what you need there.

The inner envelope is just more formal... it actually seems "birthday invitation-ish" to not have an inner envelope....
My invitations came with inner and outer envelopes so I didnt have to deal with finding one to fit... but I guess if you absolutely cant find an outer envelope to fit, you have no other choice... Most people probably wouldnt notice...

In this day and age you can do WHATEVER you want since it is your wedding.
On mine, I put Mr & Mrs or addressed to the friend I was inviting (i.e. Miss Jane Smith) then on the inner envelope wrote Jane and Guest. If the postage is going to be a nightmare and you are very clear on the outside envelope about who you are inviting (i.e. Miss Jane Smith or Miss Jane Smith & Guest) you could forgo the inner envelope.
Good luck!

I made my own invitation on the computer I used only two envelopes the one that was addressed and mailed and the one that we put our return address and stamp on for the RSVP card. No need to anymore than that, I think.

You only need an inner envelope if you're expecting the people to mail a reply of some sort. You could go around this by having them either call you or e-mail you any reply you feel is necessary.

No, it really isn't required. Its mainly so that when you mail them you can write on the outside envelope, and the guest can keep the invitation without all the writing on it. If you are wanting them, you can take your invitations to a stationary store and see if they can order some envelopes that your smaller ones will fit inside without being jumbo sized.
