Yet another Explorer question. Please note: this has only happened twice. It only happens upon inserting the key into the ignition w/o cranking. It has happened before and after the cruise control recall. The smoke comes out of the hazard lights button (surrounding hole) and the cruise control stick (surrounding hole). HELP!!!!! Akins Ford in Winder, GA says it's unrelated to the recall. I've heard it's the multifunction switch. Thoughts?

I already know there's a colony of evil micro-gnomes living under the steering wheel and that they are plotting the downfall of my truck, so please don't use that as an answer. I want a mechanical answer. :-)

Sounds like you have a bad multi-function switch. This one switch controls the hazard lights, wipers, headlamps etc. Get it replaced before it catches fire. Check the wiring too, it may be melted.

Ok, I have seen this before. There is an intermittent electrical short in the steering column. In the case of my company's tow truck (same column) it turned out to be the wiring for the turn signal, but a lot of other wires can do this. It needs to be addressed immediately (really) because it can cause a fire!

Disassemble the steering column and inspect the wires, repair/replace as necessicary!

The "smoke" was most likely steam. The belt has either dislodged or broke. The belt also drives the water pump, therefore it would overheat. Raise the hood & inspect the serpentine belt. You may have noticed the battery light on the dash & the heat gage to the maximum. »»»

Had the same issue back in 1999. It is the MFS. WTH did the engine belt have to do with anything?
