I have always worn flip flops or tennis shoes... I've always had problems with my ankles just not to this extent.

It's hard to identify a specific cause with the general information you've given.

The pattern of injury might suggest a postural habit, stress, or something that you are doing physically at work or during an activity. If you are very active, then neglecting the necesary stretches, or allowing too little recovery time between activity sessions, could result in damage of the sort you describe.

Some shoes can alter the way you habitually use your feet, and the damage this can cause may not show up for months.

If you have altered your diet, or 'dieted' severely enough to interfere with your muscle tone, then it would be normal for an injury caused by these changes to affect one limb before the other. A deficiency disease might allow your bones or connective tissue to become vulnerable; damage would be more quickly suffered in the leg you habitually put more weight on. The same would happen if the muscles supporting your ankles have been weakened by starvation ('calorie control').

Having no time to go to the doctor's is an indication that you might simply be overworking the joint. In any case, you need to prioritise differently. You will get more done by remaining healthy, than you will by generating injuries that you have no time to recover from. See a doctor, or better still in this instance, a physiotherapist.

Yes, you need some sort of medical advice. Your ankles have given you THREE CLEAR WARNINGS that something is wrong. If you seek medical help while you are still able to use the joints, you might be able to avoid spending some time on crutches or in a chair.

If you can't see a doctor, try a new pair of shoes. The shoes you wear don't have any arch support and that's important. It could be just what you need. Good Luck!

If it is a deep burning pain it might be due to excessive wear and tear on your ligaments and tendons. Try wearing trainers when you can, but I'd recommend a podiatrist.
